Holocene and local puppetry collective Beady Little Eyes‘s original interdisciplinary series, Pop + Puppetry, is back on Thursday, January 19, for the fourth installment of live puppetry synced with musical performances by Portland-based, inventive pop acts. This go around, we’ve enlisted the saccharine funk-inspired pop group Minden, otherworldly lo-fi pop act Reptaliens and the basement glam sounds of Vexations.
However subtle or not, there’s certainly an underlying sexuality that bulges forth from Minden‘s sugary-sweet pop songs. This past August the group released their second full-length LP, Simple, Sweet Things on LA-based imprint Hit City USA, to wide accolades both locally and nationally, with nods from Spin, Metapop and beyond. Minden will be paired up with puppeteers Amala Coffey, Anya Bogorad and Erin Chmela.
The extra terrestrial lo-fi dream pop sounds of Portland’s Reptaliens (read their interview feature on our blog from back in October) are irresistible to humanoid mortals. Lead by the husband and wife duo of Cole Browning and Tammy (Bambi) Barnes, the group’s sound boasts warm analog synth tones, and carefully constructed alt-pop orchestration. They’ll be paired with puppeteers Katie Shook, Summer Olsson and Katie McClenahan.
Vexations is a tonally-warm synth-heavy basement glam-pop songwriting project of Thomas Mabus (formerly of Wampire). For live performances he’s enlisted the help of Hannah Blilie on drums, Eric Sabatino on guitar, Nathan Paul on bass, Chris Hoganson on synth/sax and Betty Downey on sax/synth. Vexations performance will be synced up with puppeteers Kelly Campbell and Kristen Martz.
