Band Crush: Umii at Holocene 8.17

The Spice Girls knew what was up when they sang “2 Becomes 1.” Sure the song may have been about that thing consenting adults do behind closed doors, but I believe the meaning can be extended (no pun) even further. When two great things come together in collaboration, the outcome generally ought to be exceptional. Lucky for us, the Portland-based rising sultry singer Reva DeVito has teamed up with Cali funk producer B. Bravo for a new project called Umii, and they’ve just released their debut EP This Time out on local label Fresh Selects.

Umii mixes the best of both worlds—silky smooth vocal melodies and funky-soul production that crosses boundaries between jazzy slow-jams, disco, grooving synth concoctions, and more. On Thursday night, August 17, Umii celebrates the Portland hometown release of This Time with a performance at Holocene joined by the psychedelic R&B-pop powerhouse Hosannas and the electrifying jazzy-soul / hip hop duo Brown Calculus
