Stranger TicketsSimon Joyner is known for challenging, lyric-driven, story songs which keep him on critic's lists, inviting comparisons to Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Nick Drake, and other masters. Often called the godfather of the Omaha scene and major influence on Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes (who has covered Joyner's "Burn Rubber" and "Joy Division"), Joyner has been releasing one challenging song cycle after another on indie labels such as Jagjaguwar, Team Love, Shrimper, Truckstop/Atavistic, Brinkman since the early 1990's. John Peel famously played Joyner's "The Cowardly Traveller Pays His Toll" LP in its entirety on his program and championed Joyner throughout his career, luring him to the U.K. and Europe where he solidified his cult following. Beck even listed him in a top ten list in Rolling Stone. Famously ambivalent about touring or even promoting his records, Joyner has maintained an intentionally low profile but his music is discussed reverently by other musicians and a devoted underground fan base.
