A new dance party where you choose the adventure, and put the skills of the DJs to the test - FREE BEFORE 11!

DJs Introcut, Same DNA and Claude Balzac of Seattle's Trashy Trash crew are teaming up with Portland-based DJs Freaky Outy and Colin Jones of Holocene's own SNAP! for the Choose Your Own Adventure Dance Party! The party is a new sensation up in Seattle, and the DJs are sure to bring it for this very first Portland edition! Hosted by a drunken referee with a whistle and an airhorn, the DJs are called in and out of short sets at the whim of the host. At the beginning of each set, each song is played for 10 seconds, and the crowd is left to decide which song the DJ's set will begin with. Choose the adventure for us, while the DJ's skills are put to the test! With your help, and the magic of alcohol, this is sure to be a night to remember, that some of us won't remember. Hosted by Coco B., the lovely lady behind SNAP!

  THE RUMBLE: PORTLAND
Nucular Aminals link
Rumspringa link
A B & The Sea link
DJ Skin So Soft

A FREE party brought to you by your friends at Future Sounds, Cravedog, Pampelmoose, KBOO FM, Tonegazer, and High Scores and Records! Plus Trumer Pils specials all night!

Say it as g. dubya would: "nu-cu-lar." These Portland based, mutated popsters, Nucular Aminals, bring the zoo filled with snailephants, sea leopards + guinea slugs to your door. It's like a zoo out of a science-fiction novel...mutants scooting through the arizona sand. They sound like grumpy astronauts annoyed with the earth, ready to blast off. They are mad scientists, experimenting with the goo and ick of music, whining out positively perverse poetry and slithering song forms.

A half-century ago, baby boomer teenagers wiggled from their parents' grips to gyrate naughtily to the sonic rebellion that was captivating America--a thrilling, liberating sound that would eventually be tagged Rock n' Roll. It is with this spirit that Los Angeles-based Joey Stevens and Itaru de la Vega created the Americana outfit Rumspringa, which with its jumpy backbeat and colorful riffs seeks to reignite the hot, human passion of its audience. They draw on the energy of the earliest era of rock, when a hysteric wave of paranoia spread throughout the minds of parents, terrified that their children were listening to the devil's jungle music. Kids were responding because the music had never been more alive, and Rumspringa's contemporary tweak on dependable, rugged 12-bar blues-rock similarly awakens the inner fire of its listeners.

While they're new to San Francisco, A B & The Sea have shared the stage with such notable acts as: FUN, The Fruit Bats, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, The Submarines, The Morning Benders, Dear & The Headlights and The Miniature Tigers. Often referred to as a modern day Beach Boys meets The Beatles, A B & The Sea's beachy, carefree vibes have landed them gigs at many prominent SF venues such as The Independent, Slims, Bimbos & Bottom of the Hill. With a contagious hunger for success, A B & The Sea captured the attention of Chris Chu (The Morning Benders) and Eric Frederic (Wallpaper) & produced new songs at legendary Different Fur Studio in San Francisco.

  APES TAPES LAUNCH

Adventures! With Might link

Don't miss the showcase and launch party for brand new local tape label Apes Tapes!

Where the world of digital media has unwound the tactile side of independent music, Apes Tapes is coming along, pencil in hand, to rewind it back up into that tangible plastic casing, made ready to hand to everyone who can press play. The goal of the label is not groundbreaking, but essential to the Portland music scene: we want to support local music that we love by putting out tapes which we see as a more permanent media than CDs and more affordable than vinyl. This way we can support as many artists as we believe in.

This August will reveal the first wave of Apes Tapes releases, starting with a sparkling compilation of bands from the label's current roster, Mixed Ape, as well as split tapes from Radiation City / Your Canvas and Onuinu / Tony Bambino.

Holocene will be hosting the Apes Tapes Launch party, a midweek playground that will let you rewind the loose ends back into something you can feel! Onuinu (formerly Tropics), Soap Collectors, Your Canvas and Adventures! With Might are the perfect mixtape of smiling synthesizers, guitars waltzing with fast-forward foxtrotting keyboards, and dancing to the beat of all your friends singing! The button to push is PLAY, so let's all play together!

JD Twitch (Of Optimo) (Glasgow) link
Honey Soundsystem DJs (San Francisco) link
Linger & Quiet link

April 25th, 2010 was the end of an era. Every Sunday for 11 years Glasgow was blessed with Optimo - the greatest party in the world. Thousands tuned in to the live stream of the final event. Tears were shed, goosebumps were had, and finally when Twitch's edit of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" dropped - hearts were broken. But tonight, Portland - Optimo is back and is coming to you! JD Twitch, one half of the famed duo will be here to share a bit of that love with the Northwest. Quite possibly the best DJ in the world, Twitch's genius has to be heard to be believed. Rock, disco, punk, techno, house, pop favorites and obscure gems abound. Don't miss this super rare opportunity.

And just how lucky can you get!? We'll also be welcoming the queens of the San Francisco disco scene - Honey Soundsystem. NIGHTCLUBBING has had our eye on them since the very beginning and we are so very proud to welcome these fine gents up to Portland. We think they've summed it up best: "We bond over our shared love of timeless sound, iconic imagery, the complete look, indulgent behavior, and most of all, attractive men." Here, here!

And of course Linger & Quiet will be your humble and gracious hosts.

  Soft Rock Happy Hour
Kendall Holladay link

Please join us from 5-8pm for our weekly Aperitivo Happy Hour, which--in European style--features an impressive array of free appetizers straight from the Holocene kitchen (while they last). We'll also have great (and cheap!) Prosecco, and delightful Continental cocktails. This week we'll enjoy the DJ stylings of Kendall Holladay, that connoisseur of Soft Rock...

Kendall Holladay Soft Rock Dee-Jay is taking the chill out of your Friday eve with a Soft Rock Happy Hour @ Holocene. From 5-8 pm, Kendall will be playing only the best to satisfy your Soft Rock needs: America, Seals & Crofts, Bob Welch, Bread, Ambrosia and other stalwarts of the softest pop era ever. A seasoned practioner of the Soft Rock aesthetic, Kendall wades through the muck of Michael Bolton and the mire of "I Just Called To Say I Love You" to get to the heart of the matter: soft guitars, warm drum sounds, maybe a flute, and the softest, smoothest vocals that grown-up, bearded men were able to get away with. All played on the original vinyl of the day to enhance the "rec room" vibe. Grab a white wine spritzer, cozy up to your lover or friends and let Kendall Holladay Soft Rock you.

  ROCKBOX link

ROCKBOX is a dance party. Pure and Simple. The triumvirate of DJ KEZ (KBOO, THE FIX), Matt Nelkin (KPSU), and Dundiggy (THE FIX) play a masterfully blended mix of fun, dance oriented Hiphop, R&B, and Old School Electro with a dash of Bmore, Dancehall, 80s, and House thrown in for good measure.

As die-hard record collectors all three Dj's play exclusively vinyl. Every set and every ROCKBOX dance party is a custom experience with these cats digging into their seemingly bottomless crates to pull out the beats that make you want to sweat out the work week. More than just another gig for these talented three, ROCKBOX dance party represents their long held vision of merging the classics alongside the progressive.
