Parra for Cuva, Tor, Rohne – 21+

PLEASE NOTE: For the safety of our customers, we will be requiring proof of full COVID vaccination (or negative rapid COVID test), to enter the venue until further notice. More details at holocene.org/vaccine It’s an amusing paradox how Parra for Cuva’s new album Juno, containing recordings of the South American ronroco, an Indian flute player, and the hammered dulcimer, an ancient Persian instrument, was almost entirely produced within the four walls of the artist’s studio in Berlin. Back in 2019, the German musician found himself in a sort of pre-pandemic lockdown – his girlfriend was pregnant at the time and the couple’s activities were mostly confined to their home. Still, Nicolas Demuth managed to fit the world into Juno – explorations with new instruments and languages, tracks named after African animals and exotic destinations. Interestingly, the album itself, Juno borrows its name from a child that lay safe inside a womb and hadn’t yet experienced the world at all. That’s the beauty of the 21st century though, one barely has to leave a room to travel far and wide. Parra for Cuva’s previous highly acclaimed album, Paspatou, titled after the butler of Jule Verne’s “Around The World In 80 Days”, already hinted at the musician’s worldly outlook. It also carved a unique position for Parra for Cuva as an artist, who brought a truly original sound to electronic music by mixing emotional dance floor experimentations with acoustic and ethnic soundscapes. Juno takes this global interaction further with the participation of seven musicians from around the world, many of whom Nicolas met online and worked with remotely. In his studio, the diverse display of instruments – from bells to flutes to kalimbas and hang drums of all kinds – makes evident just how much Nicolas is an explorer of sound. Juno’s aptly named opener, Her Entrance, which features recordings of an Indian flute player Nicolas met somewhere in the desert of Rajasthan, feels indeed like an entryway into the world. Parra for Cuva has no problem in mixing it all up – vocals might come in the form of Ordel’s catchy English lyrics, sung by the Australian Kyson or by South African singer Bongewize Mabandla singing in his mother-tongue isiXhosa in Kamara. While the former track uses gentle guitar melodies by British neo-soul guitarist Beau Diako to inspire wander, the latter uses electronic grooves – provided by German analog synthesizer guru Moglii – to do just the same. Genre-wise there’s also a big compound in Juno that spans downtempo to house with pit stops in hip-hop and pop rhythmics, it’s part of Parra for Cuva’s style to surprise listeners. Manila Palm which starts off as the album’s more accessible and straightforward track, suddenly reveals itself through an unpredictable chorus of heavy bassline and a James Brown-style drumset. Somehow having this many influences and styles in the album doesn’t make Juno one bit incoherent – the tracks fit in and flow into one another perfectly. It’s music that’s in constant movement, seeping slowly and carrying you along with it. Despite being based in the city of techno, Parra for Cuva’s music stands in sharp contrast to Berlin’s distinguished hard electronica. Nicolas is making music much more akin to contemporaries such as Christian Loffler and Max Cooper, who are unafraid of infusing their electronic productions with warm, oftentimes melancholic, analog sounds.

More details at holocene.org/vaccine The Glitch Princess, Nat Ćmiel, was born December 16, 1997 in Singapore, Singapore. They are  a non-binary, London-based painter, musician, performance artist, and cyborg entity. During adolescence they found solace and comfort in an internet of niche online communities, MMORPG gaming, and tumblr. The yeule project was fabricated by Ćmiel to act as a portal to communicate their art to the outside world while still being protected within their inner shell. yeule has always had access to multiple avatars and the freedom to change or contort at will– a mutable, chameleon-like multiplicity. The music becomes a way to store fragments of their reality, dreams, and inner states–an external memory device, a brain or emotional center that exists independently of its creator.   “Glitch Princess” opens a channel to the in-between spaces: error messages and broken computer code, what it is to be conceptually manifested and the curation of the aesthete. Ćmiel’s experiences with sobriety resulted in a flood of emotions and “Glitch Princess” is the undiluted excerpt of this downpour. A redirection of chaotic energy into verse, and the opportunity to confront their own vices. Soothing un-melodies rest comfortably among the jagged edges of feedback loops. Video game scores, experimental shoegaze sounds, and ethereal whispers come together to build an underworld with the occasional erratic dance beat to guide users deeper into the fever dream. It is an album of liminal spaces, a digital sphere straddling sweetness and death with the understanding that the two will always be tied to each other. yeule is inviting us to transcend into a post-human world where expression is no longer bound by identity, but rather we are free to assemble ourselves along lines of affinity. A future where our assigned gender is no longer relevant and can congregate with whoever we are drawn to, regardless of our prior designations.Michele Yue is a Chinese born American DJ, musician, and jewelry designer originally from Houston, TX currently residing in NYC. Yue has had a long-standing love for fashion, music, and using her body as a means of expression since childhood. Growing up in Houston, Yue studied ballet and piano and later graduated with a degree in Art History. Through experimentation with her appearance, Yue realized that she could alter her physical identity to become art. In her early adulthood, Yue was deeply influenced by performing in the underground music scene and attending the raves and clubs in Texas. In 2017, Yue left the US to live in Paris, where she fell in love with the art, fashion, and club scene. In 2018, Yue relocated to NYC, where she feels the most at home. Today, Yue is inspired by raw, untethered emotion and the universal spiritual journey. Her experimental sets are a diverse mixture spanning multiple genres designed create an emotional climax.

Night Heron, Twingle, Down Time – 21+

PLEASE NOTE: For the safety of our customers, we will be requiring proof of full COVID vaccination (or negative rapid COVID test), to enter the venue until further notice. More details at holocene.org/vaccine Night Heron is the creation of Cameron Spies, former frontman for Radiation City. After Radiation City broke up Cameron enlisted some of his favorite musicians. The players on this record hail from other projects (currently or formerly) such as: Y La Bamba, Reptaliens, Nicole McCabe, and Aan.Cam and Sara’s daughter Alma was born November 30, 2018. The first song for this record was written shortly thereafter and the band began recording in February at Trash Treasury in Portland. Sara recorded her vocal parts in April, and it was mixed in Oakland in June by Rob Shelton (Luke Temple, John Vanderslice) and mastered by Kelly Hibbert (J Dilla, Rhye, Little Dragon)Most art strives to be at once particular and universal, and Night Heron achieves the ideal in these sad duets. The global crisis—our common claustrophobic constraint—has proved generative. The question the universal poses to the particular: will this constraint save us or seal our doom? Neither, the music seems to answer. We are not doomed or saved—we are transformed.
