ericdoa: THINGS WITH WINGS TOUR – EARLY SHOW – w/ juno & Glasear – All Ages

PLEASE NOTE: For the safety of our customers, we will be requiring proof of full COVID vaccination (or negative rapid COVID test), to enter the venue until further notice. More details at holocene.org/vaccine ericdoa’s bedroom-based operation developed a humble but engaged following on SoundCloud, where Eric released his debut project, Public Target, in 2020. On the heels of the project, and with several of Eric’s friends and collaborators beginning to grow followings of their own, the online community began to circulate. The music they had been making via Discord calls since their younger teenage years was beginning to buzz, and was soon coined “hyperpop,” even receiving its own Spotify editorial playlist to underline the attention. As with any SoundCloud-born trend, there was skepticism about what “hyperpop” was, whether or not the kids making it would last more than a year or two, and why exactly the music sounded like it did when this first happened. But as Eric and his friends continued to release music, the attention grew, finding an exclamation point in Eric’s late 2020 project, COA. Framed as a “coming of age” project released just after Eric’s 18th birthday, COA helped make the buzz tangible, translating this weird new sound into a well-developed project that made an instant impact on DSPs, received a positive review from the notorious music outlet Pitchfork, and most importantly, pushed this Discord-born online community to new heights — all from Eric’s bedroom, and all thanks to a bunch of teenagers he met on the internet. In 2021 Eric continued his upward trajectory of experimental releases and shared a slew of buoyant tracks — his Interscope Records debut, titled “back n forth” which received major support from Rolling Stone and Paper Magazine, followed by “fantasize” which currently has 17 million steams globally and “strangers” which led to Alternative Press naming him one of “The Artists Set To Rule Your Year [2022].” In addition to his solo releases Eric also released his collaborative effort with fellow artist, glaive. The project, which was followed by a sold out US tour, received impressive praise from The New York Times, The FADER, Pitchfork, DORK and more. Today Eric has caught the attention from the likes of Trippie Redd, Yungblud, Addison Rae and many more.As Eric continues to work on forging his own path, up next is his track “sad4whattt” — which was made on a whim with his frequent collaborators Whethan, Glasear, and fortuneswan. “None of us really revisited the track after we made it. I laid a hook idea that I had for 4 days and ended up forgetting about it entirely until we threw it together in this pack of demos to send over to HBO. Not knowing what they would pick, they ended up choosing something that all shocked us, in a good way of course.” Eventually the ecstatic song was featured on the Emmy®-winning HBO drama series Euphoria Season 2. While Eric no longer has to record on an XBox USB microphone out of his bedroom and he’s finally met a few more of his best friends in real life, not a whole lot else has changed. The formula is still the same, and as he continues to release music his forthcoming project will show, Eric’s next work will be his best yet.

CANCELED – Pendant – 21+

This event has been canceled. PLEASE NOTE: For the safety of our customers, we will be requiring proof of full COVID vaccination (or negative rapid COVID test), to enter the venue until further notice. More details at holocene.org/vaccine Pendant is the recording project and creative outlet of Los Angeles based artist Christopher Adams. After a decade at the helm of various bands, Adams struck out on his own, uninhibited to follow his creative intuition. Those efforts yielded 2019’s Through A Coil, an ambitious collection of gauzy slowcore, haunting shoegaze and gritty rock. Paste Magazine praised the album, describing it’s eclectic sound as “harsher than a typical Britpop album and more pop-forward than your average shoegaze record, bringing the best of both worlds”, while Stereogum called it a “fuzzy blowout”.In the time since, he’s completely overhauled his approach, ditching the guitars and turning inward, indulging in every creative impulse. His new material traces a current of experimentalism that runs from icons like Aphex Twin through to contemporaries Yves Tumour and Eartheater. Dense and unrelenting, and yet more accessible than anything Adams has ever released, the new collection naturally led to a signing with iconic indie label Saddle Creek, which has spent the past few years consecrating its legacy as an indie stalwart with left-field signings like SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE and Disq. His latest, the sweat soaked, rave adjacent “Blood Rite” was hailed by FLOOD as “punk-meets-techno bliss”, and by Paste as “like Justice and at times a bit like Crystal Castles, Pendant captures the magic that made both stand out.” Electronic music is something that’s been “gnawing away” at Adams over the years, and with this new direction, he builds electronic pop like someone looking at the form with new eyes.

Anand Wilder (of Yeasayer) w/ AAN – 21+

PLEASE NOTE: For the safety of our customers, we will be requiring proof of full COVID vaccination (or negative rapid COVID test), to enter the venue until further notice. More details at holocene.org/vaccine Quarantine caught Anand Wilder at a crossroads. After fourteen years and five studio albums, his former band Yeasayer—art rock experimentalists whose sonic concoctions often felt like a musical lab leak—broke up in late 2019, just before COVID-19 began careening across the planet. Friends fled for rural retreats, while Wilder’s family stayed in Brooklyn so his wife could care for her patients as a midwife, and he could resume full time parenting for their two daughters. Professionally, it was an abrupt record scratch moment for Wilder, a veteran touring musician and ceaselessly collaborative bandmate. But Wilder was determined to press on creatively despite the isolation and the disintegration of his beloved former group. He had always blended his music with domestic rhythms at home in Brooklyn, where some of Yeasayer’s later records were also cut. Now, casually picking out Max Romeo’s “Uptown Babies Don’t Cry” or Lovin’Spoonful’s “Rain on the Roof” for the kids at bedtime could ignite late night writing and recording jags. He soon realized he was passing an intergenerational baton: “My mom, who was born in India, is a huge music lover. Whatever we were doing, the Beatles, Cat Stevens and Fairport Convention were playing in the house through these homemade speakers my father had wired. The lockdown brought all that back to me, and the music I began making translates that musical mood of my childhood for my family now. I wanted to go back to basics, back to songs. Light on electronics and experimentation, heavy on acoustics and vocals.” The outcome is his first solo album I Don’t Know My Words. Ten songs, in braided strands of English folk revival, Topanga Canyon jangle, and desert blues licks, offer taut documents of a gloomy hour of collective confinement, but also elegant proofs of folk rock songcraft’s inexhaustible machinery. Wilder reveals vulnerable moments of pandemic panic and addresses the challenges of love and dedication as he follows New York’s path through the worldwide emergency, and as he confronts the personal, political, and professional reckonings that spanned it. With I Don’t Know My Words, Wilder torques his multi-instrumentality away from electronica and global genre-hopping and makes it a lonely lockdown challenge. Aside from ambient documentary noise of family life and New York’s mysteriously pervasive rash of fireworks, he played every sound on the album, from a plucked cello on “Get More Than My Share” to the bowed acoustic guitars heard in “Sick Hotel,” which simulate a string section. In oscillating textures of dulcimers, twelve-strings, and tumbling, song-serving drums, he arpeggiates, beats, and blasts out moments of elevated feeling from tedium and routine.

Laufey – ALL AGES – presented by PDX Jazz – w/ Matilda Mann

An All Ages show with Laufey, presented by PDX Jazz! This is a reschedule of her February show at Jack London Revue, all tickets for that previous show will be honored for the new date and venue.PLEASE NOTE: For the safety of our customers, we will be requiring proof of full COVID vaccination (or negative rapid COVID test), to enter the venue until further notice. More details at holocene.org/vaccine Half Chinese and half Icelandic, Laufey spent much of her childhood traveling between Reykjavík and Washington, DC, where she learned to speak English with barely a trace of an accent. Inspired in part by her mother, a classical violinist, she took up piano and cello early on, but it was her father’s collection of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday albums that spoke to her on a deeper level. “I’m definitely very influenced by composers like Ravel and Chopin,” Laufey explains, “but when I discovered the Great American Songbook and the music of George Gershwin and Richard Rodgers, it felt like this middle ground between jazz and classical that suited me perfectly.” Laufey dove into the music headfirst, captivated by the lush arrangements and dreamy vocals, and by her teenage years, she was already turning heads with a mesmerizing style that belied her young age. After landing a prestigious Presidential Scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, Laufey moved to Boston, where she began writing her own songs blending sophisticated jazz melodies and slow-burning R&B grooves. Unable to tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she began performing a mix of originals and vintage classics on Instagram and TikTok, and within a year, she would find herself racking up millions of likes, topping the Icelandic radio charts with her debut single, “Street By Street,” and earning support from Billie Eilish and Willow Smith. Laufey will release her debut EP, Typical of Me, later this year.VIP UPGRADES ARE NOW AVAILABLE!VIP Package ticket purchasers should plan to arrive one hour prior to doors in order to participate in the VIP experience. Since the trio met in 2016, they’ve been creating at a steady clip, working new material in Chicago clubs while releasing their 2017 record Susan’s Room and their 2019 EPs A and B. In recent years guitarist/vocalist Rand Kelly and bassist/vocalist Ramsey Bell returned to their homes in Kentucky, while drummer/vocalist Josh Resing stayed in Chicago, but the distance hasn’t dulled their creative spark. Over the pandemic, the band have been putting together their newly announced LP, Tomato Tree, which the band sees as their first proper full-length album. Recorded at Chicago’s Pallet Sound, the album sees the band’s slowcore-tinged slacker pop expand in new directions, showcasing the band’s winding instrumental sprawl and effortless chemistry.” – Under the RadarM A N E is a 5-piece Art-Pop R&B project featuring (current + former) members of Pure Bathing Culture & Y La Bamba.
