In November of 2020, Sands leaked a song called “Dress” that she wrote about Harry Styles wearing a dress on the cover of Vogue. Within hours, the song became an anthem of self-expression for thousands (now, millions) of listeners across the globe. The electric-blue-haired singer/songwriter’s musical career didn’t start with the overnight success of a viral song. At 18, she stole her mom’s car, found a roommate on Craigslist, and left her home in Hopkinton, MA for Nashville, TN, with a plan to take a year off of school before attending Berklee College of Music. She never went back. She dropped 7 singles from her bedroom in lockdown. Alternative Press named Sands one of “11 rising artists who fine-tuned their sound”. Spotify chose Charlotte for the cover of their year-end playlist, Fresh Finds: Best of Pop 2020 – her catalog amassing over 30 Million Global Streams. She builds a depth into her songs and live performances inspired by soul and folk/roots influences, without taking herself too seriously while letting her decidedly wicked sense of humor shine. “Veiled in the sonic shroud of avant-pop’s murky soundscapes, Portland, Oregon experimental Duo Mordecai are forging an incendiary path. Performing everything herself on record, Shaylee comes alive in a live setting as a tight, dynamic power trio, eschewing the grandiose arrangements of her recorded output in exchange for lean, mean, and energetic rock’n’roll. Toeing the line between power pop, post-rock, and psych-rock, Shaylee’s music feels immediately familiar yet totally unique, scratching many an itch for avid fanatics of guitar music with a distinctly queer edge. The Apricots are an emerging Portland project serving their own sweet, glossy sounds that are hard to pin down. Their music is influenced from all directions, from indie rock to alternative funk while finding their center in sweet-like-honey vocal harmonies.
