Blood Red Shoes, Mz Neon – Early show! – 21+

PLEASE NOTE: For the safety of our customers, we will be requiring proof of full COVID vaccination (or negative rapid COVID test), to enter the venue until further notice. More details at holocene.org/vaccine An early show with Blood Red Shoes! GHOSTS ON TAPE is a huge jump into new terrain for Blood Red Shoes. Musically and emotionally their most mature work, it is a complex, imaginative, and very gothic development on their sound. Musically, it leaves almost no trace of their former selves.  “We’ve always been outsiders right from the very beginning” says Steven. Starting out in the DIY punk scene which completely rejected them for not fitting the mould, they wrote “It’s Getting Boring By The Sea” as a f-you to small mindedness of that exact scene. “Then all of a sudden we were playing indie disco nights where we basically came across like Slayer” laughs Laura-Mary. Too heavy for the indie scene, too punk for the pop kids, too melodic for the hipster punks and too danceable for the hard rockers, Blood Red Shoes have always been a confusing proposition. Over time that rejection and outsiderdom is something they have come to accept and love.  “This album is really about us asserting ourselves as our own little island”, declares Steven. “We have made an entire career out of being told what we are “not”, of being rejected, of not fitting in, and this album is us deliberately pushing into all of our strangeness, emphasising all of the things that make us different”. Obsessed by true crime and murder podcasts, many songs on the record are told in character and explore the dark psyche of those at the pinnacle of outsiderdom: serial killers. GHOSTS ON TAPE paints a picture of a dark and unsettling world, starting with the apocalyptic, discordant piano epic “COMPLY”, through the Tears For Fears-indebted “MORBID FASCINATION” and ending on “FOUR TWO SEVEN”, a haunting and personal take on the act of holding onto the hurt of a broken relationship because hurt is the only shred of it you have left. It is the sound of a unified and confident duo who know exactly who they are, even if the wider world doesn’t really get it. The sound of two people who have spent their entire adult lives making music together and who, more than ever, are finding new pathways for their creativity.  “Ultimately this album is an invitation”, explains Steven. “It’s us saying, this is our world, these are our darkest thoughts and feelings – our ghosts – caught on tape. You are welcome to join us. Come and embrace the strange”.  Mz Neon is a genre bending punk chanteuse turned rap mistress based in Los Angeles by way of Brooklyn, NYC. A lyrical provocateur, Mz Neon confronts issues of identity, sexuality, politics, spirituality and lived experiences as atrans-femme-fatale with a punk rock pedigree. She is a triple threat of sharp wit, hypnotic sensuality and musical virtuosity with a tough yet unapologetic ownership of her own visceral vulnerability.

More details at holocene.org/vaccine Tickets will be available at the door!Using a filtered and treated electric guitar as the starting point for his lush soundscapes, Fennesz has created a personal and groundbreaking discourse throughout his career. Perhaps sculpting the last truly unique vision for the guitar, his luminant compositions are anything but sterile experiments. Fennesz’s world of sound unfolds and resembles sensitive, telescopic recordings of rainforest insect life or natural atmospheric occurrences, an inherent naturalism permeating each piece. In addition to his prolific output as a solo artist, and his ongoing investigation of the limits of noise, automatic composition, field music or contemporary classical, Fennesz is also a frequent collaborator with other luminaries of the scene. These include artists such as Alva Noto, Oren Ambarchi, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Keith Rowe, Peter Rehberg, David Sylvian, and Jim O’Rourke. Currently studying sonic arts in Berlin, Joseph Kamaru aka KMRU is a Nairobi-born, Berlin- based sound artist whose work is grounded on the discourse of field recording, noise, and improvisation. His work posits expanded listening cultures of sonic thoughts and sound practices, a proposition to consider and reflect on auditory cultures beyond the norms, and an awareness of surroundings through creative compositions and installations. His last three albums, 2020’s “Peel”, “Opaquer” and “Jar” received high praise from Resident Advisor, DJ Mag, NPR, and Bandcamp, KMRU is part of SHAPE platform roaster of artists for 2021. His works have been presented in NyegeNyege Festival (UG), CTM Festival (DE), GAMMA (RU), and Mutek Montreal and Barcelona.

PLEASE NOTE: For the safety of our customers, we will be requiring proof of full COVID vaccination (or negative rapid COVID test), to enter the venue until further notice. More details at holocene.org/vaccine THE AQUADOLLS:The Aquadolls were founded in January 2012 by Melissa Brooks, the lead singer and songwriter for the band in La Mirada, California. Melissa began recording bedroom demos of her songs and eventually released We Are Free in early 2013, and then debuted her album Stoked on You in December 2014.    After a brief break from releases, the stars aligned in July 2018 and the new era of The Aquadolls commenced with Jacqueline Proctor on drums and Keilah Nina on bass. The band grew as a powerful threesome leading up to the release of The Aquadolls highly anticipated second album, The Dream and the Deception, recorded and self-produced by Brooks and self-released October 28, 2018 on Aqua Babe Records. Following their sophomore album, they have self-released the single Suck on This in summer 2019, followed by their viral cover of Lash’s Take Me Away in October 2020. In July 2021, The Aquadolls signed to indie label Enci Records and released their latest single Disappearing Girl, followed by Xmas Wrapping in November 2021, featuring members of NOFX and Fishbone. Having opened for artists like Pennywise, Kate Nash, Vivian Girls, and X, playing festivals with Weezer, Rancid, Cat Power, and FIDLAR, touring with White Reaper, as well as headlining North American tours and playing local California shows, The Aquadolls are in-your-face and good vibes all at once with energetic performances that leave you anticipating the next show. The Aquadolls pack a punch with tongue-in cheek lyrics, hard-hitting licks, and soothing vocal harmonies that will guarantee a head bang from anyone listening. SITTING ON STACY:Sitting On Stacy sounds like Southern California. With sun-soaked sixties-style harmonies, galloping punked-out rhythms, and moments of swaying reggae, the trio—Hoyt Yeatman [lead vocals, guitar], Kyle Hart [bass, vocals], and Trevor Smith [drums]—bottle these breezy vibes into a bold, bright, and upbeat signature sound. Growing up north of Los Angeles in Ventura County, the boys initially met in a middle school music program at Rock Nation Studios. Friendly childhood jams evolved into proper high school bands. Simultaneously, they listened to everyone from Beach Boys, The Irish Rovers, and Black Flag to Sublime, Stone Temple Pilots, and Korn. Upon graduating, Hoyt headed to San Diego State University followed by Kyle a year later. They officially formed Sitting On Stacy during 2017, cutting their teeth with countless college house party gigs up and down the coast. Following Obsessed, Perfectly Sane, and the Mel’s Neck of the Woods EP, “Chest Hair” cracked 1 million Spotify streams in 2019 as buzz grew. Once the global pandemic hit, the boys turned to TikTok, posting covers on the platform. After gathering millions of streams independently and working with Fat Mike of NOFX, the band properly introduce themselves on their debut EP for Let’s Get It! Records/Republic Records led by the single “This Summer’s Day.”

Magdalena Bay, Cecile Believe – ALL AGES

PLEASE NOTE: For the safety of our customers, we will be requiring proof of full COVID vaccination (or negative rapid COVID test), to enter the venue until further notice. More details at holocene.org/vaccine Few artists are at once artful and savvy enough to transcend the endless scroll, but over the past 18 months, LA-based indie-pop duo Magdalena Bay have used social platforms to dispatch their music, and what you might call their philosophy, in hypnotic, ephemeral bursts. A long trip through their feeds produces music videos in miniature, irreverent pontifications on the state of the music industry delivered via home video VHS aesthetics, and existential meditations on everything from International Women’s Day to the clone craze of the early aughts to the indefinite lifespan of plants. To Mica Tenenbaum and Matt Lewin, reality can be unmade, manipulated beyond all recognition; their project is as much musical as it is an experiment in pop persona and visual aesthetics. On October 8th, Magdalena Bay released their debut full-length LP, Mercurial World, via Luminelle. Entirely written, produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by the duo, Mercurial World proposes an abstract theory of time and explores the staggering “what ifs” that make up the human experience. Approaching reality as a construct allows Magdalena Bay to enact their own, one that is committed to nothing but expanding the possible.
