PRIDE WEEKEND – EARLY SHOW: Major Tomboys (all-femme Bowie tribute band) – w/ Shawna Pair – 21+
Ziggy Stardust fell to Earth once upon a time. It is the mission of Major Tomboys to pay tribute to his god-given ass. Major Tomboys is Portland’s all-femme David Bowie tribute band founded by Renée Muzquiz (lead singer/guitar) and Lauren Hatch (keyboard) in the summer of 2018. There was a flash of lightning, an explosion of glitter, and suddenly a band was formed (the real story is a lot less exciting and involves the magic of Craigslist, but don’t tell anyone). As self-proclaimed Bowie nerds, Major Tomboys love to dress up in costumes and share their interpretations of his music with those who also long to rock out in their frock coats and bipperty bopperty hats. From “Wham bam, thank you, ma’am” to “Ch-ch-ch-changes,” they’ll have you singing along with your favorite tracks before you know it. In the past, you may have seen them at Pride parties, Rose City Rollers’ events, the Risk/Reward Festival and more. Joined by Ruba Tuesday (lead guitar), Sarah FitzGerald (bass), Jolie Clausen (drums) and Dani Tanzella (saxophone), they are finally back from their pandemic hiatus and ready to be rockin’ rollin’ bitches for you!. Shawna Pair makes energetic and lucid art pop. Influenced by New Wave, New Jack Swing, Shoegaze, Classic Rock, EDM, Disco, and 80s tv theme songs, Shawna’s songwriting is visceral and vulnerable. She grew up a Southern Baptist preacher’s kid in rural Alabama and later came out as trans. Lyrically, Shawna deals with tough relationships and grasping for intimacy from disenchanted partners which became lessons for Shawna to believe in herself. Shawna’s music is about getting free. Despite many loved ones fighting to keep her in a box.

Rose Entertainment presents: Dusky – 21+
Dusky are London production duo Nick Harriman and Alfie Granger-Howell. The duo have asserted themselves as leaders of the UK underground. BBC Essential Mix of The Year contenders, DJ Mag cover stars, headliners everywhere from Berlin’s Panorama Bar to London’s Fabric, Dusky’s story so far is one of constant forward motion and a uniquely universal appeal. The duo’s breakthrough track was undoubtedly 2012’s iTunes Dance Single Of The Year ‘Flo Jam’. Signed by the label that broke Maya Jane Coles (Dogmatik), its deep grooves were hammered by everyone from Loefah, Joy Orbison and Boddika to Disclosure, Jamie Jones and Sasha, with even Calvin Harris getting in on the act. Since those formative releases marked them out as talents destined for the top, Dusky have pushed their sound forward every step of the way. There have been Italo bassline meets Belgian rave vibes on Running Back, rugged warehouse techno excursions on Loefah’s School and classy melodic grooves on Anjunadeep. But, it was ‘Careless’ on Aus that cemented their place in the scene’s hall of fame. Over 14 million streams, definitive UK house banger of its era and soundtrack to countless crack-ons ever since. In 2017, the duo launched their 17 Steps label, taking control of this unique identity and giving it the unrestricted platform it deserves. JOY, their debut album on the imprint, amassed over 6 million streams with ‘Eros’, the most streamed track on the LP, paving way for their new garage project Pressure. A musical excursion looking back to their formative years and early productions that were heavily influenced by UK and US garage. Whatever musical sub-strain Dusky turn their hands to, there is always a strong common thread – a signature depth and detailing. A stamp of quality, that makes for an instantly recognisable ‘Dusky’ sound.

Holocene and Spend the Night present: ELKKA W/ BANGS – 21+
“Make me love you, make me love you, make me love you,” so begins “Make Me”, a delicious yet cavernous electronic dance track from London-based artist and producer Elkka; all heavy repetitive beats and glistening, syrupy vocal samples. Much of debut album Prism of Pleasure is like this: warmth and coldness rubbing against each other sonically, pulling the listener in unexpected directions. “I like to go through different genres and moods and surprise you,” says Elkka. Written over the space of 18 months, Prism of Pleasure encapsulates Elkka’s essence as a bold, queer woman who pushes freedom and sensuality to the forefront of her work. It hasn’t always been like this: born and raised in South Wales, with next to no queer community in her immediate vicinity, Elkka had to piece together her identity slowly and curiously, gradually finding herself along the way. After coming out and moving to London in her 20s, the musician started DJing, writing and producing, which eventually led to her launching her own record label, femme culture, and running her own queer club nights off the back of that. “I think sometimes things unlock, and start to make sense and then you just follow it,” Elkka says now. “I started to go out more and become part of a community. I was more confident in myself, so I was more confident in writing and producing – it all came together at the same time.” Written around the notion of queer intimacy, Prism of Pleasure is like a peep into a steam-filled room of wonders, via the female gaze (a concept beautifully represented in the pink-tinged album artwork, photographed by Elkka’s wife and longtime creative collaborator Alex Lambert). From the smooth, silken vocals of “Crushhh” to the slow-winding, breathy beats of “Your Skin” (“I’m breathing you in, I want to taste every inch of your skin”) and the steady, undulating synth patterns of “surrender2me”, Prism of Pleasure unfurls like a patchwork of sweat-slick nights, emotional connectedness and hidden pleasures. “It’s like a celebration of [how far] I’ve come,” explains Elkka. “I was never taught about queer pleasure. I was never taught how important that is – not just sexually but generally in life. So I wanted to explore all of that more deeply.” Ultimately, Prism of Pleasure is the result of Elkka opening herself up in new ways, and being as authentic as possible. “I wanted a rawness to this album,” she says. “It’s something that can be felt, and that helps you connect with someone that’s listening to it, if you’re willing to expose a part of yourself. And again, this is all really transferable to relationships, and being with someone, all of that stuff. and that’s why these things overlap for me. I gave everything I could, and hopefully that translates.”
