PELADA w/ Crystal Quartez – 21+

Pelada, the duo of singer Chris Vargas and producer Tobias Rochman, broke out ofMontreal’s underground warehouse rave scene in 2014 after uploading tracks toSoundcloud which caught the attention of the global dance music scene. They spent thenext five years touring the globe extensively before signing with Berlin experimentallabel PAN in 2019 and releasing their debut LP ‘Movimiento Para Cambio’. A recordwhich Mixmag included in their ‘Best Albums of the Decade’ list, Resident Advisornamed it ‘One of the Best Records of 2019’ while DJ Mag asserted “they are a vital andcontemporary addition to dance music’s punk cannon”. The LP was featured twice onthe godfather of punk Iggy Pop’s BBC6 radio show who personally told his listeners“They always wake me up. I like this.”Their collaboration is a blend of urgent Spanish language vocals centered aroundthemes of power, control, social justice with hardware samplers, synths, and drummachines. The unique sound has led them to perform in many different contexts, whether it be entire tours opening for more traditional punk acts like Iceage and Shame,to the exact opposite, performing live during peak times at techno clubs such asBerghain. In 2023, Pelada return to the live stage for a 3-part world tour. Part 1, which concludedin June, included stops in Italy, Switzerland, Japan, and Australia. Part 2 will see themvisit the USA, Canada, France, and Germany in support of their highly anticipated 2ndalbum ‘Ahora Más Que Nunca,’ which they are self-releasing. The new album featuresnotable guest appearances, including Zambian-Canadian rapper and 2020 Polaris Prizewinner Backxwash and trumpet player Aquiles Navarro (of Irreversible Entanglements,Impulse! Records). Both Pelada’s sound and ethos translate to a galvanizing live show that will springdancefloors to action in festival contexts, switched-on club zones, and punk bunkersalike.   With local support from Crystal Quartez

Chanel Beads w/ Mary Jane Dunphe – 21+

Chanel Beads — the project of New York-based musician Shane Lavers — announces his debut album, Your Day Will Come (out 4/19 on Jagjaguwar), and shares the lead single/video, “Idea June.” Your Day Will Come marks Lavers’ arrival as a new force in experimental music. Throughout the album, Lavers captures the many contradictions of modern existence and the strange infiniteness of the digital world. Though he incorporates the scrappy sonics of post-punk, the gripping sentimentality of pop tunes, and the spectral artifice of electronic music, he blurs lines through unconventional song structures that build into transcendental climaxes. As he intentionally prints his songs down to embed fried artifacts and ghostly remains, the resulting songs have a time-collapsing quality, both transitory and timeless. Following previous single “Police Scanner,” “Idea June” features live bandmate Maya McGrory taking lead vocals to project Lavers’ lyrics. As McGrory sings in a voice that’s both earnest and digitally processed, it’s as though she’s speaking as a separate embodiment of Lavers. In under two minutes, the track of clunky acoustic guitar and gutting strings lands somewhere between detachment and kinship. The track becomes strangely affecting in its unfinished and liminal form, and Lavers, who is drawn to poor MP3 rips and transitional moments in DJ mixes, knows that these inexact musical artifacts evoke human imperfection. With Support from Mary Jane Dunphe

PRIDE WEEKEND – EARLY SHOW: Major Tomboys (all-femme Bowie tribute band) – w/ Shawna Pair – 21+

Ziggy Stardust fell to Earth once upon a time. It is the mission of Major Tomboys to pay tribute to his god-given ass. Major Tomboys is Portland’s all-femme David Bowie tribute band founded by Renée Muzquiz (lead singer/guitar) and Lauren Hatch (keyboard) in the summer of 2018. There was a flash of lightning, an explosion of glitter, and suddenly a band was formed (the real story is a lot less exciting and involves the magic of Craigslist, but don’t tell anyone). As self-proclaimed Bowie nerds, Major Tomboys love to dress up in costumes and share their interpretations of his music with those who also long to rock out in their frock coats and bipperty bopperty hats. From “Wham bam, thank you, ma’am” to “Ch-ch-ch-changes,” they’ll have you singing along with your favorite tracks before you know it. In the past, you may have seen them at Pride parties, Rose City Rollers’ events, the Risk/Reward Festival and more. Joined by Ruba Tuesday (lead guitar), Sarah FitzGerald (bass), Jolie Clausen (drums) and Dani Tanzella (saxophone), they are finally back from their pandemic hiatus and ready to be rockin’ rollin’ bitches for you!. Shawna Pair makes energetic and lucid art pop. Influenced by New Wave, New Jack Swing, Shoegaze, Classic Rock, EDM, Disco, and 80s tv theme songs, Shawna’s songwriting is visceral and vulnerable. She grew up a Southern Baptist preacher’s kid in rural Alabama and later came out as trans. Lyrically, Shawna deals with tough relationships and grasping for intimacy from disenchanted partners which became lessons for Shawna to believe in herself. Shawna’s music is about getting free. Despite many loved ones fighting to keep her in a box.
