BABERS, Faith & Majesty, Kitchen Congregation – 21+

BABERS is a moody indie band based in Portland fronted by Dana Cargioli (guitar & vocals) & Lisa Haagen (guitar, drums & vocals). The band released their sophomore EP on May 5th, 2023. The music sits in an incredibly catchy pocket that makes it undeniably pop- while serving syncopated rhythms and counter melodies that add complexity. Rooted in the electric guitar, the arrangements create the effect of a much larger band. The dual leads have their own distinct voices that seamlessly blend into complex harmonies. They are often seen switching instruments during the live set which creates an entertaining visual element. The BABERS catalog is a masterclass in dynamics: soft spoken lyrics and gentle harmonies open the songs like a conversation and then build to reveal the furthest limits of their individual vocal ranges over rock arrangements. Faith&Majesty are an indie folk/alt sister duo/band. Their contemplative writing melded with hard-hitting harmonies make their music feel like a heartbreaking lullaby. Having started making music together in 2016, the duo are excited to release their first EP in 2023 following their string of single releases. kitchen congregation is the solo project of hannah morton who has been writing and performing music in bands for nearly a decade. The name for the moniker was a light-hearted play on an observation that hannah made about how it seems social gatherings somehow end with friends gathering around in the kitchen. The moniker has taken on a second meaning as the recorded works have become a sort of collaboration among friends. The songs play around with observations hannah has made about herself and the people around her (just life stuff) with a bedroom pop / folk sound. The live kitchen congregation set features hannah’s vocals and words backed by finger picked electric guitar and occasional tracks and violin. kitchen congregation put out their first ep “i’m not having fun anymore” in 2021 and is currently recording their 2nd ep, “this is gonna suck” due out in 2023.

Colleen (live performance) – Plus a conversation between Shawn Reynaldo & Spencer Doran – DJ Beacon Sound – Early show! – 21+

Holocene and Megalith present:French artist Cécile Schott aka Colleen is fearless in her willingness to explore new sounds and new ways of creating music as a solo performer. Over the course of seven critically acclaimed albums released between 2003 and 2021, Cécile Schott consistently reinvented herself, first by taking acoustic instruments out of their usual context and pushing the boundaries of their playability, then through avant-pop electronic explorations. With compositions ranging from the mysterious and contemplative to kinetic and playful, the Thrill Jockey recording artist has given more than 230 concerts across Europe, the US, Japan, Brazil and Singapore, in prestigious venues and festivals such as Moogfest, Big Ears, Mutek, Transmediale, Villette Sonique, Rewire and many more. From 2003 to 2007, she released three albums on The Leaf Label (Everyone Alive Wants Answers in 2003, The Golden Morning Breaks in 2005 and Les Ondes Silencieuses in 2007). After a break from recording and touring, Colleen returned with The Weighing of the Heart, using her voice for the first time and introducing a modified treble viola da gamba. The artist then released a string of albums for Thrill Jockey Records: 2015’s Captain of None in 2015, noticed for its daring use of viola da gamba in other-worldly pop songs incorporating dub-inspired techniques, 2017’s A flame my love, a frequency, which heralded a shift to a purely electronic setup, and 2021’s The Tunnel and the Clearing, produced in the aftermath of a profound personal crisis: vintage drum machine, organ, Moog synthesizer, her voice and her beloved Moogerfoogers and Space Echo tape delay united to create “an emotional noise” in her most harmonically complex record to date. Colleen’s growing passion for synthesis, bolstered by her collaborations with synth manufacturer Moog, have led to her 8th album Le jour et la nuit du réel, to be released on Thrill Jockey on September 22nd, 2023. Built as a suite of songs, the artist’s first double album is also her first purely instrumental work since 2007, and aims to translate through a myriad of sound transformations the complexity of our relation to reality, and its psychological mutations through the cycles of day and night.Sharing the bill with Colleen for this special event will be author Shawn Reynaldo, in conversation with Spencer Doran (of Visible Cloaks) on the subject of electronic music culture. Andrew from Beacon Sound will be helming the turntables during the evening.Shawn Reynaldo is a Barcelona-based writer and editor who specialises in electronic music. A Bay area native who first found his way into the rave scene during the late 90s, he’s spent decades immersed in independent music culture, logging countless hours running labels, throwing parties and hosting radio shows. However, his work as a music journalist has made him one of electronic music’s most prominent voices. Author of the First Floor newsletter, Shawn was formerly an editor at Red Bull Music Academy and XLR8R and has also contributed to such publications as Pitchfork, NPR, SPIN, Resident Advisor, DJ Mag, Bandcamp Daily and Beatportal. He will be touring the States in support of his new book, First Floor Volume 1: Reflections on Electronic Music Culture.
Silvertongue, Kid Ferris, Caragold – 21+

Silvertongue is a Portland-based indie-rock band known for their genre-bending, catchy guitar riffs, and vulnerable story-telling. With themes of generational frustration, friendship, missed connections, and self-doubt, Silvertongue paints a perfect picture of early adult life in a city far from home. The group consists of Andrew Stevens (vocals, guitar), Jake Hogan (lead guitar), Dorian Taylor (bass), Melissa Boell (keys) and Joe-Henry McQuary (Drums). KiD FERRiS is an artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist based out of Portland, OR. He blends multiple styles to create a unique blend and genuine fusion of psyche-rock, hip-hop, indie-electronic, and pop. He tends to gravitate towards music that comes from the soul and inspires us to be true to our higher selves. After years of playing guitar, singing, and making songs for fun, he decided to pursue music production in 2017 to take his music to the next level and start to really create the music that he had always dreamed of. Caragold started in a remote cabin overlooking Mt. Adams in Glenwood, WA. Founding member, Ross Charland, would retreat to the cabin every couple of months to write in solitude. Enough trips to the wilderness laid the foundation for their eponymous debut album, released in 2022. The current roster includes Colin Robson on bass, Jason Taylor on guitar and Stevie Driscoll on drums. Their music weaves between rock, psych, disco and pop. Their current live show is pure high energy. A real workout of a set. Really everything you could ever want in a performance. Do not miss them if you have the opportunity. Just make sure you stretch.

Coco & Clair Clair – w/ Raven Artson – presented by Holocene and Mr. Harry – All Ages

Coco & Clair Clair knew from the moment they met that they were meant to make music together. Similarly, listeners are immediately drawn to the Atlanta-bred duo through their clever, infectious, and genre-defying songs. Their devoted fan base is primed to grow with the release of their debut project, SEXY. “It’s impactful, but it’s a really silly word,” Clair Clair says of the title. “And then, none of the songs are actually that sexy.” Coco & Clair Clair are used to being misjudged at first glance, but these 13 songs put forth their most authentic selves, especially dynamic, flair-filled singles “Cherub” and “Love Me,” and put to bed any questions about their artistry. “‘Cherub’ shows people our more hip-hop, rap side and then ‘Love Me’ is more lofi poppy [and] pop star vibes,” Coco says. “It’s showing people, hey, we can do both.” “We both really wanted to show our capabilities,” Clair Clair adds. “Some songs, Coco raps so fast, which she’s never done before. And some of the songs, I actually try to sing or I just talk. It was important to us that we tried new things and showcased what we can do without putting out songs that are like, Well, they just put this out because this is a popular sound right now and that’s why Coco and Claire are jumping on it. It’s still very much us, but it’s new and fresh.” Growing up in the suburbs of Atlanta, Coco and Clair Clair’s respective skill sets were on display from early ages. Coco was an only child, so she turned toward the internet to find her community and ultimately found an outlet for self-expression: “I didn’t have anyone to vibe with at home, so I would just vibe online a lot, and I got into music through MySpace. I would make music videos for friends, and then I started making beats.” Clair Clair adds, “I always wanted to be a singer but I don’t think I ever thought I would actually be one.” Toward the end of high school in 2014, Coco and Clair Clair met through mutual friends on Twitter and would soon influence and teach each other. Their foundational friendship and intrinsic trust are conduits for making music that is singularly theirs but also universally relatable. “We really rely on the other person,” Clair Clair says. “We’ll both go write our verses, and then we share them with each other and let the other person edit them. Everything is very much both of our brains combined, which we couldn’t do with someone who wasn’t a very good friend because it’s such a vulnerable process.” In 2017, Coco & Clair Clair decided to record, mix, and self-release the seven-track project POSH before Clair Clair left Atlanta for New York City — to at least get their music out into the world because they weren’t sure the next time they’d be together to make more. The confident, eclectic single “Pretty” took off, introducing their tongue-in-cheek lyricism and multi-layered soundscapes, and boasts over 60 million Spotify streams to date. But it wasn’t until May 2019, when they were flown to Santa Ana, Calif., to perform with Cowgirl Clue that they realized they were becoming career musicians. Since then, their momentum has been gradual and undeniable, growing from viral TikTok moments to playlist placements alongside Doja Cat or PinkPantheress. Catchy singles such as December 2020’s “Pop Star” reinforced why fans fell in love with them in the first place, while sets at Lollapalooza and Osheaga converted new fans ahead of SEXY’s arrival this fall.
