underscores – w/ Jedwill – presented by Mammoth NW – All Ages

Origin stories reenact familiar myths; this one begins with a kid alone in a bedroom, trying to make something no one has heard before. Hailing from San Francisco, Filipino-American artist April Harper Grey started making music as underscores in middle school, when years of noodling around on GarageBand culminated in the realization that, if taken seriously enough, this whole “trying to be like Skrillex” thing might amount to something great. For years, underscores released a steady stream of one-offs via SoundCloud, which endeared her to like minded artists and a burgeoning community of fans, but it wasn’t until 2017, with the release of EP skin purifying treatment, that the project stepped out of its solitary origins and began to capture the attention of a much larger audience. In 2021, Grey released the debut underscores album, fishmonger, which was written and recorded in that same childhood bedroom amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.  That collection launched Grey from recording vocals in a car to opening for 100 Gecs on the U.S. leg of the 10,000 Gecs tour. Before hitting the road, underscores released yet another collection, boneyard aka fearmonger, a collection of seven tracks that manages to sound like both the climax of and the morning after the craziest night of your life. On the heels of 10,000 Gecs, the first underscores mini-tour sold out in NY, LA, Chicago, and Grey’s hometown of San Francisco. Since then, Grey has played Lollapalooza’s Main Stage, Electric Forest, FVDED in the Park, and Corona Capital CDMX. Independent since the project’s inception, underscores signed to Mom+Pop last year. She also debuted “Count of three (You can eat $#@!)” – co-written with Dylan Brady (of 100 Gecs), Cashmere Cat, Benny Blanco – on 100 Gecs’ Dog Show Records. Since dropping boneyard aka fearmonger, she’s produced music for Alice Longyu Gao, glaive, Whethan, and renforshort. The world eagerly awaits the next underscores knowing it will jolt us out of reverie. That is, after all, Grey’s ethos: “When people listen to underscores, I want their initial reaction to be, ‘This is ridiculous.’ But the more they listen to it, they should hear the nuance in it, the heaviness in it, and I hope they connect with it on some kind of emotional level. The ultimate goal is to turn people off, then win them back.”

Christian French: The Space Between Tour – w/ Devon Gabriella, Lisa Heller – All Ages

With over 400 million global streams and praise from TIME Magazine, Billboard, UPROXX, Ones To Watch, American Songwriter, and more under his belt, 26-year-old Christian French is one of today’s fastest-rising indie-pop stars. The Indiana native learned to play piano by watching YouTube and posting covers online, eventually going on to write music in college before chasing his dreams to Los Angeles. It was there in 2017, while sleeping on friends’ couches, that he penned his first single, “love ride,” which amassed over 33 million streams worldwide and set the tone for his bright future. Touring nationwide with Chelsea Cutler and Quinn XCII, followed by his own headlining tour, Christian released a series of EPs including natural colors, bright side of the moon, and good things take time, followed by the singles “avalanche” and “OH WELL” in 2021, embodying a more confident sound that straddled pop and rock without losing the clarity of its predecessor. Over the past year, Christian has continued to further hone his sound and identity, learning how to play guitar and produce, in addition to expanding his fanbase through social media. With more music set for release this year, Christian French is poised to usher in a bright new sound and sense of self.with support from Devon Gabriella and Lisa Heller

Riovaz – RioRave II: Disturb the Norm – w/ Wolfacejoeyy -All Ages

Riovaz’s music deftly captures the frenetic, unpredictable energy of growing up. Influenced by drum & bass, post-punk and dance composition, his genre-blurring, cutting-edge pop songs that have won him both critical and commercial success before he even graduated high school—are both emotionally rich and dizzyingly varied. It’s rare that two songs sound exactly the same. On his lovesick 2020 breakthrough “Prom Night,” he sang of feeling like death over lilting pop arrangements. But he’s equally likely to spill his heart over crystalline electronic arrangements (“you’re a parasite”) or bouncy house refractions (“Tell Me All Your Fears”). It’s all different, but each track is united by honest, lived-in lyrics from a teenager who doesn’t want to pretend to be anyone but himself. He demonstrates that on his eclectic EP Disturb The Norm. The 8-song project boasts singles “U Neva” and “Tantrum (Pace Yourself)” as well as the skaiwater-assisted “Hypnotized.” Propulsive and poignant, the dance anthems continue to highlight the 19-year-old’s songwriting and defiant originality. Disturb The Norm went on to received major backing – Office Magazine praised him naming his process “boundless,” while Billboard, acclaimed him as a “21 Under 21” artists to watch.  Riovaz grew up in Jersey City, NJ surrounded by music. His brother is an avid music fan, his sister is a talented singer, and their parents were always playing ’80s Argentinian alt-rock and Michael Jackson at home. This consistent exposure to music from a young age initially transitioned into curious artistry through playing Guitar Hero, and by 13, he was making his own songs. Before uploading his track “Prom Night”, which now has over 100 million streams, he had been regularly posting music to SoundCloud and Instagram. The formula for “Prom Night” wasn’t any more calculated, but there is a spark to the track. It resonated with listeners quickly. When Riovaz saw it organically going viral—the audio for the song multiplying by 20, 40, or 50 each time he looked—he posted his first-ever TikTok and told his family about his music for the first time. A busy year for Rio – after the success of Disturb The Norm, the burgeoning artist kicked off his headline, sold out, RIORAVE tour and performed to wild crowds in Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Orlando, Atlanta, and New York before wrapping in Chicago. He also went overseas for three additional shows and performed at Pharrell Williams’ Something In The Water.  With all his newfound success, Riovaz proves that he’s far more than an artist to watch. Wolfacejoeyy is a 20-year-old artist from Staten Island, NY. He started his music career with producing in 2017 for SoFaygo and RewindRaps, soon after in 2020 Wolfacejoeyy wanted to take it to the next level and pursue his own music career. Since the virality of Wolfacejoeyy’s “Shake It,” he’s been releasing back-to-back catchy melodies, hip-shaking production, and angelic vocals. With the support from his city artists like B-Lovee and Murda B dancing to his viral sounds on TikTok and Tariq from Power (also know as Whereis22) being one of his main collaborators, Wolfacejoeyy has New York City Behind him. Paving his lane in both the underground and drill spaces, Joeyy has grown a core fanbase like no other.

Jim White & Marisa Anderson – w/ Methods Body – 21+

Thank you to our event sponsor Revival Drum Shop!Jim White and Marisa Anderson share an abounding appetite for musical exploration. White,as a member of Venom P Stinger, Dirty Three, and Xylouris White, is well known for his creativeand idiosyncratic drumming. His singular abilities have also led to collaborations with Cat Power, PJ Harvey, and Bill Callahan among others. Anderson’s prolific output as a solo performer, her mastery of traditional folk and blues forms and her abilities to make them entirely her own hasestablished her as one of the most exciting and forward-thinking guitarists of the last decade. White and Anderson’s considerable technical skills are used in the most inventive and unconventional manner on their debut duo recording, The Quickening. The duo’s friendship and shared explorative nature inform these warm and daring improvisations. The Quickening’s remarkable performances take the listener on a journey of exuberant discovery. White and Anderson are instrumentalists whose voices are unmistakable and spellbindingly lyrical. Anderson unravels guitar traditions from across the globe into atmospheres all their own through improvisations and melodic lines that transform with each iteration. White implements an array of sticks, brushes, and techniques that imbue each rhythmic passage with its own distinct personality. Together their melodic flourishes cascade and twist upon one another, at times trading conversational exchanges, and at others drifting in unison as if lost in the same train of thought. Ecstatic pieces like “Gathering” and “The Other Christmas Song” harken back to Anderson’s playing with the improv-heavy Evolutionary Jass Band and carry with them a sense of perpetual motion. That feeling of urgency and maximalism is in turn contrasted by the open spaces and quiet subtleties of “Unwritten” and “Diver”. The idea of a collaboration developed while on the road together in 2015, Anderson playing solo and White playing with Xylouris White. The Quickening began at the Portland studio Type Foundry in late 2018, where the duo initially agreed to meet and improvise and record. Happy with the recordings, the duo headed to Mexico City and into Estudios Noviembres, a time capsule of a studio from the 70’s that had been largely closed before some young engineers took it over. The “slight disorientation” of working in less familiar environments mirrored their willingness to plunge headfirst into exploring new sonic territory together. Anderson purchased a new nylon string Ramos-Castillo guitar from a Mexican luthier just ahead of recording which leant to the spontaneity of “The Lucky” and “The Quickening”. The duo did not rehearse or perform together prior to the recording sessions; as White puts it, “it’s good to suspend disbelief at this stage of playing.” The Quickening (released on Thrill Jockey in 2020) is an improvised work guided by emotional intuition and executed by players whose mastery of their instruments is undeniable. The elegance of Jim White and Marisa Anderson’s highly attuned collaboration lays in each player’s ability to empathetically spin their collective experience into music of potent and boundless beauty.METHODS BODY (Portland, OR, USA) creates original sound art and music using custom tuning systems, involuted polyrhythms, and the cadences of language. John Niekrasz (Ecstatic Peace, ESP-Disk’) and Luke Wyland (The Leaf Label, Hometapes, Crammed Records) use bespoke live-sampling technologies and meta-cognitive compositions to inhabit waves of subliminal melody and deep, uncanny grooves.
