Donovan Woods and Henry Jamison: The Husbandry Tour – Early show! – w/ Isabel Pless – 21+

Donovan Woods was in on the joke when he named his latest release. Riffing on a lyric from a Martin Simpson song (“Never Any Good”), Big Hurt Boy is a six-song exploration of how our failures — and our fixations on them — not only shape but enlighten us. Woods’ deep curiosity about the human condition is why we so clearly hear our own stories in his. The details differ, the characters change, but at their core, Donovan Woods songs are for and about everyone. That’s particularly apparent on his new EP, released March 18, 2022. “These are smaller, less polished songs than the ones I’ve been putting out recently,” says Woods, winner of the 2019 Juno Award for contemporary roots album (for Both Ways) and whose global streams have surpassed 210 million. Still, Big Hurt Boy brims with some of the luminous production touches Woods has been adding to this repertoire lately.Big Hurt Boy is the follow-up to 2020’s Without People, Woods’ celebrated album he made in isolation at the height of the pandemic. Whereas those songs were recorded in a makeshift studio at his Toronto home, with collaborators working remotely, his latest release harnesses the electricity of a roomful of musicians laying down tracks live in the studio, a first for Woods. As respected as he is as a solo artist, Woods is evolving and upending our expectations of how his music sounds. His songs have grown more dimensional, emboldened by new sonic landscapes, reminding us that classic songwriting transcends genre. Henry Jamison’s 2022 third LP The Years was produced by Doug Schadt (Maggie Rogers, Claud) plus long-standing collaborators Thomas Bartlett (Florence & The Machine, Sufjan Stevens) and Harris Paseltiner of Darlingside. Featured vocalist Maisie Peters and composer Nico Muhly (Adele, Bjork) round out the cast on what is Jamison’s most dynamic and diverse collection of songs to date. Since his 2017 debut The Wilds, which was humbly produced with two friends at a sugarbush/apiary in his native Vermont, Jamison has branched out to become one of the most interesting collaborators of his generation. His 2019 follow up Gloria Duplex explored identity, class and masculinity over baroque textures and performances from Thomas Bartlett, Rob Moose (Phoebe Bridger, Bon Iver, Taylor Swift) and Shazhad Ismaily (Damien Rice, Nils Frahm, Marketa Irglová). In 2020 Jamison released Tourism, a five-song folk collection, featuring JOSEPH, Ed Droste, Fenne Lily, Darlingside and Lady Lamb.Jamison’s uncanny ability to weave folk lyricism and instruments through a popular veneer has led to over 300M streams and widespread praise, especially from his peers. Adrianne Lenker describes, “Songs that sing me through mazes of my own sensuality and sadness and help me to feel less alone in the journey to understand myself.”

Childspeak, Helens, Stammering – 21+

Since 2013, the Portland-based Childspeak has fused post-rock, math rock, and prog to create a mind melting mixture all their own. The instrumental band recently finished their second collaboration with Grammy award winning producer Marcel Fernandez (Molotov, Foo Fighters), and keep pushing forward with the new record- but never straight. Tentatively set for a Spring 2023 release, Childspeak’s latest batch of lawless, hyper-saturated sounds are as deep as they are diverse. Tracked live at the legendary Robert Lang Studios, the album also reflects a turning point for the band that favors chemistry over perfection. The band’s raw, organic self is on full display here – and that’s just the way they like it.Helens is a Shoegaze / Dream Pop quartet based out of Portland, Oregon. After several years and EPs they have released a new album of melancholic anthems to soundtrack an escape to anywhere else but here. The new album, Somewhere In Nowhere, was recorded in 2020 by Corey Coffman (Gleemer) and was released on November 18th, 2022. with help from Portland all-star label, Bud Tapes. Somewhere In Nowhere infuses the band’s unique Shoegaze/Post-Rock/Alternative mixture with lusher melodies and more Dream Pop sensibility than previous output. The recent expansion of the lineup to a four piece with added guitar textures has also widened the band’s scope which carries the listener from wistful wash to searing sonics.Stammering is a 4 piece rock band from Portland, OR. The band formed in 2019 when two buddies from Las Vegas (Cory and Bobby) decided they wanted to make some cinematic, punchy, aggressive, thoughtful music together. The two scoured the local rock scene for a drummer who fit the part. Eventually crossing paths with Luna Vista drummer Sam, the band began to take shape. In early 2020 the band recorded what would become their first record titled ‘Aftersome’ with help from sound engineer, Matt Bayles. The band began performing live around the Portland and Seattle area. In an attempt to push the band in a more intentional direction, the band added guitar and synth player, Ward. With a new lineup locked in Stammering is currently writing for their next release. If instrumental melodic meandering and syncopated rhythms are your bag, quit your job and listen to Stammering for 40 hours this week.
Bankrol Hayden: THE 29 TOUR – w/ Scorey, KillBunk – presented by Mammoth NW – All Ages

Equal parts casual and charismatic, California rapper Bankrol Hayden built a significant fan base in the late 2010s and early 2020s with his laid-back brand of hip-hop. After working his way into the spotlight with a series of key singles and freestyles, he made his breakthrough with 2019’s Luh Kel-assisted “Brothers,” which appeared on his 2020 debut Pain Is Temporary. He then paired with Lil Tecca for the 2021 track “Come Through,” and continued issuing solo singles. Born and raised in Modesto, California, Bankrol Hayden made his debut in the rap game with 2017’s “Humble,” an emotive rap narrative uploaded to streaming platforms under his given name, Hayden Inacio. Adopting the Bankrol Hayden moniker, he found his first major success later that year, when sophomore single “Ride with You” (a freestyle over OutKast’s iconic “Ms. Jackson”) found a viral audience on video streaming platforms. With a laid-back flow and candid writing style, it was not long before Hayden built a substantial following: his 2018 single “29,” a somber reflection on his near-death experience, landed the rapper millions of streams via staple rap platform WorldStarHipHop. Closing out 2018 with a string of further singles (“28,” “Real,” “Bestfriend,” “Drumsticks,” and “Sandlott”), Hayden issued a third viral hit that year with a freestyle over Drake’s “Nice for What.” After catching the eyes of the wider industry with the 2019 single “B.A.N.K.R.O.L.,” he secured a collaboration with Top 40-charting artist Luh Kel; the duo’s relationship-driven “Brothers” soon became Hayden’s biggest hit to date, racking up over 50 million streams. He returned in early 2020 with the summer-infused trap of “Costa Rica.” Both tracks later appeared on his official debut, Pain Is Temporary, which also featured guest appearances by Lil Baby, Polo G, and the Kid LAROI. A stand-alone track, “Come Through” featuring Lil Tecca, arrived in September 2021. Further singles included “No Drama” and 2022’s “Fuck Love.”

Xiu Xiu – All Ages – w/ Lucia Luna, Ferngazer

XIU XIU: IGNORE GRIEFThis is a record of halves.Angela Seo sings on half of the record. Jamie Stewart sings on half of the record.Half of the songs are experimental industrial. Half of the songs are experimental modern classical. Half of it is real. Half of it is imaginary. The real songs attempt to turn the worst life has offered to five people the band is connected with into some kind of desperate shape that does something, anything, other than grind and brutalize their hearts and memory within these stunningly horrendous experiences. The imaginary songs are an expansion and abstract exploration of the early rock and roll “Teen Tragedy” genre as jumping off point to decontaminate the band’s own overwhelming emotions in knowing and living with what has happened to these five people. What none of this record does and despite the oft repeated assertion, what Xiu Xiu has never done, is attempt to superficially shock the listener. Instead, Xiu Xiu has spent twenty years grappling with how to process, to be empathetic towards, to disobey and to reorganize horror; there is no other word for it other than horror. The motivation for writing Ignore Grief to be about a child who was sold into prostitution by his mother, a junior high student who was kidnapped and murdered, incessantly choosing alcohol and cocaine over one’s family, becoming lost in the bleakest, darkest aspects of cultish spirituality and committing suicide as means to escape and protest a life of violent sex work is because the members of Xiu Xiu themselves are deeply shocked. Old friend and new member David Kendrick (Sparks, Devo, Gleaming Spires) joins Angela Seo and Jamie Stewart through whatever this may be and whatever it may mean and why ever it may have occurred. The point of aesthetic examination is to see if there is any way to come out the other side or if there is even any reason. In either case there may not be but to simply turn away would be yet a further act of destruction. “I had now lost all confidence in myself, doubted all men immeasurably, and abandoned all hopes for the things of this world, all joy, all sympathy, eternally. This was the truly decisive incident of my life. I had been split through the forehead between the eyebrows, a wound that was to throb with pain whenever I came into contact with a human being.” -Osamu Dazai
