Jim White & Marisa Anderson – w/ Methods Body – 21+

Thank you to our event sponsor Revival Drum Shop!Jim White and Marisa Anderson share an abounding appetite for musical exploration. White,as a member of Venom P Stinger, Dirty Three, and Xylouris White, is well known for his creativeand idiosyncratic drumming. His singular abilities have also led to collaborations with Cat Power, PJ Harvey, and Bill Callahan among others. Anderson’s prolific output as a solo performer, her mastery of traditional folk and blues forms and her abilities to make them entirely her own hasestablished her as one of the most exciting and forward-thinking guitarists of the last decade. White and Anderson’s considerable technical skills are used in the most inventive and unconventional manner on their debut duo recording, The Quickening. The duo’s friendship and shared explorative nature inform these warm and daring improvisations. The Quickening’s remarkable performances take the listener on a journey of exuberant discovery. White and Anderson are instrumentalists whose voices are unmistakable and spellbindingly lyrical. Anderson unravels guitar traditions from across the globe into atmospheres all their own through improvisations and melodic lines that transform with each iteration. White implements an array of sticks, brushes, and techniques that imbue each rhythmic passage with its own distinct personality. Together their melodic flourishes cascade and twist upon one another, at times trading conversational exchanges, and at others drifting in unison as if lost in the same train of thought. Ecstatic pieces like “Gathering” and “The Other Christmas Song” harken back to Anderson’s playing with the improv-heavy Evolutionary Jass Band and carry with them a sense of perpetual motion. That feeling of urgency and maximalism is in turn contrasted by the open spaces and quiet subtleties of “Unwritten” and “Diver”. The idea of a collaboration developed while on the road together in 2015, Anderson playing solo and White playing with Xylouris White. The Quickening began at the Portland studio Type Foundry in late 2018, where the duo initially agreed to meet and improvise and record. Happy with the recordings, the duo headed to Mexico City and into Estudios Noviembres, a time capsule of a studio from the 70’s that had been largely closed before some young engineers took it over. The “slight disorientation” of working in less familiar environments mirrored their willingness to plunge headfirst into exploring new sonic territory together. Anderson purchased a new nylon string Ramos-Castillo guitar from a Mexican luthier just ahead of recording which leant to the spontaneity of “The Lucky” and “The Quickening”. The duo did not rehearse or perform together prior to the recording sessions; as White puts it, “it’s good to suspend disbelief at this stage of playing.” The Quickening (released on Thrill Jockey in 2020) is an improvised work guided by emotional intuition and executed by players whose mastery of their instruments is undeniable. The elegance of Jim White and Marisa Anderson’s highly attuned collaboration lays in each player’s ability to empathetically spin their collective experience into music of potent and boundless beauty.METHODS BODY (Portland, OR, USA) creates original sound art and music using custom tuning systems, involuted polyrhythms, and the cadences of language. John Niekrasz (Ecstatic Peace, ESP-Disk’) and Luke Wyland (The Leaf Label, Hometapes, Crammed Records) use bespoke live-sampling technologies and meta-cognitive compositions to inhabit waves of subliminal melody and deep, uncanny grooves.

Spend The Night presents: Move Dhttp://residentadvisor.net/dj/movedhttps://www.discogs.com/artist/838-Move-Dhttps://soundcloud.com/move-dShi Shihttps://soundcloud.com/djshishiiii Move D, aka David Moufang, is one of modern electronic musicสผs most beloved souls with a long and varied musical history with roots in the 60s and 70s jazz, psychedelic, rock, soul and early electronica.Making his first appearance on vinyl as part of a school bands competition in 1983, it was only another four years before he started toying with the medium as a DJ, playing funk, soul, hip-hop, and proto-house.    In the 90s things began to move fast with the inception of his Source Records imprint, early productions (including the debut Move D LP สปKunststoffสผ – Source Records, 1994) and the beginnings of a 26 album relationship with a close friend, the late Pete Namlook.  Since then, Moufang has become an unassuming heavyweight in house music as a producer for countless forward-thinking labels, a collaborator and a truly original selector. His discography is long and impressive and holds releases on a broad variety of labels such as Source, Modern Love, Workshop, Smallville, Warp, Running Back, Uzuri and Electric Minds among others plus collaborations and involvements in projects like Magic Mountain High (w. Juju & Jordash) and Reagenz (w. Jonah Sharp). Not one to slack off, his live and Dj performances have been on par with (if not superior to) his studio work, pulling from all corners of his diverse catalog to create an experience that attacks the hips and head in equal measure. His releases touch on house conventions but are delivered in his inimitable style, leaving everyone – from longtime fans to the uninitiated— with their jaws on the floor and their hands in the air.

Saloli (album release show!) w/ Patricia Wolf, Lou Trove – Early show! – 21+

Portland pianist Mary Sutton second’s full-length for Kranky delves deeper into her roots as a Cherokee Nation citizen (Saloli, pronounced like “slowly,” is the Cherokee word for ‘squirrel’). The album is intended to evoke “a day in the life of a bear in a canyon in the Smoky Mountains,” with each track channeling a different emotion or experience in its daily explorations. As with her 2018 debut, The Deep End, the entirety of Canyon was composed and performed live on a Sequential Circuits MultiTrak synthesizer – but this time routed through a delay pedal. This refraction adds a lyrical spatial quality, as though “echoing off canyon walls.” It’s music both gentle and adventurous, curiously rooting through soils and streams, in a sustained state of discovery. In Cherokee teachings, humans and animals are considered to have no essential difference – originally, all the creatures of the earth lived together in harmony. Canyon captures shades of this Edenic notion across eight elegant pieces, alternately meandering, pensive, playful, and pure. Sutton’s playing, as always, is dexterous and dimensional, mirroring the dazzled senses of its muse. “Saloli’s miniatures shiver with crystalline arabesques of ice.” – Tiny Mix Tapes “…gorgeous: fluid, warm, and reassuringly down to earth. Instead of atmospheric sublimity, it’s keyed to the humility of the human form at its most vulnerable.” – PitchforkPatricia Wolf is a musician, sound designer, field recordist residing in Portland, Oregon. Wolf’s work sonically unites natural and modern worlds, integrating ecological sources into her minimalist compositions. Using melody and repetition she lures listeners to her hypnotic inner space, conjuring vivid textures and atmospheres imbued with emotion. Her debut album, I’ll Look For You In Others was released in February 2022 on Past Inside The Present and was quickly followed up by her 2nd LP See-Through which was released on the Catalan label, Balmat.Lou Trove is the nom de plume for Adam Torres’ new experimental ambient / electronic music project, which features the sounds and textures of digital mellotron flute to narrate incisive compositions inspired by precious gemstones.  Aesthetically and thematically sparkly, Lou Trove makes music for meditation, hearing as seeing, and for adventures of the imagination.
