CANCELED: Quiet Bison, Slurgeon – 21+

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED DUE TO THE FORECASTED INCLEMENT WEATHER. ALL BUYERS WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY REFUNDED. WE HOPE TO RESCHEDULE AT A LATER DATE!Quiet Bison’s music dissolves the barrier between genre and sound. After his breakthrough debut EP Trials and Tribulations sent a shotgun blast into the dance music atmosphere, the Portland- producer captured the attention of the entire industry. Furthering his ascent into the fantastic world of avant-garde production Quiet Bison released his sophomore EP Sequence in 2019. The 4-track EP captured the attention of NEST HQ, Skrillex’s former media giant who subsequently hosted Quiet Bison for a NEST HQ MiniMix and interview. Sequence was followed by an official remix for What So Not’s single “We Can Be Friends” featuring Herizen. The tail end of 2019 was a fiery one for Quiet Bison as he scored an inclusion on Flume’s Hi This Is Flume playlist, joined Alison Wonderland on her Radio Wonderland podcast, and later debuted his live set opening for What So Not. Wrapping up a busy 2019, Quiet Bison delivered his third studio EP Nightfall which garnered praise from tastemakers like Billboard Dance, Future Classic Recommends, and Dancing Astronaut, just to name a few. Although his 2020 supporting tour alongside DROELOE and Chet Porter was cancelled amid a global pandemic, he still firmly holds his place. Following a series of singles including a feature from Flume-collaborator Reo Cragun, Pauline Herr and many more, Quiet Bison release ‘Dawn’ in February of 2022. Starover Blue (single release), The Eldest Young (album release), Ezza Rose – 21+

PLEASE NOTE: For the safety of our customers, we will be requiring proof of full COVID vaccination (or negative rapid COVID test), to enter the venue until further notice. More details at holocene.org/vaccine The nostalgic tones of a Juno-106 combine with ambient layers, sparkling guitars, and airy, bittersweet vocals to define Starover Blue’s sophomore LP Ordinary Magic. Much like Spacegeist, their 2016 debut, the record is a synth-saturated opus, drawing from classical music, dream pop, and folk, as well as sci-fi and dystopian fiction. Tracks “Janeway,” “A B Y,” “Anemone,” and “The Howl Makes No Sound” showcase the group’s penchant for textural experimentation and subtle odd meters. Founding members Kendall Sallay and Dirk Milotz began their musical partnership in 2007 in the San Jose State University music department. Live, the band pulls from a multi-faceted discography, appealing to fans of acts such as Cocteau Twins, Wye Oak, Beach House, The Joy Formidable, Low Roar, and The Antlers.Book of Spells, the latest full-length release from Portland experimental indie rockers The Eldest Young, chronicles a restless young man’s search for connection, meaning, and love, taking sonic cues from Mt. Joy, Tame Impala, and the National. Through contemplative, danceable tracks full of shimmering synths, grooving basslines, and drawling vocals that ring like mantras, we follow our protagonist as he ventures deep into the world of mysticism in hopes of combatting his loneliness and discovering a sense of purpose. Will he find what he’s looking for? Vortex Magazine writes of Ezza Rose: “Her beautifully delicate, mournfully classic voice floats amongst the loosely bound, misty particles in the air and our minds and fills the cracks with a sound that’s chilling and comforting, all at once.”

Say She She – w/ Foamboy – 21+

The female-led discodelic soul band Say She She – named as a silent nod to Nile Rodgers (C’est chi-chi!: It’s Chic!”) will transport you with their dreamy harmonies, catchy hooks and up-tempo grooves. The band’s sound is a hat tip to late 70’s girl groups with the three strong female lead voices of Piya Malik (El Michels Affair staple feature, and former backing singer for Chicano Batman), Sabrina Mileo Cunningham and Nya Gazelle Brown (former 79.5) at the epicenter of a roaring 7 piece band. The band’s debut single FORGET ME NOT quickly proved to be a certified dancefloor banger. Written as an ode to New York City’s Guerilla Girls fighting racial and gender discrimination in the art world – premiered by DJ Novena Carmel on Morning Becomes Eclectic  and described by Jeremy Sole as “ The Funkiest shit Ive heard in a while!”  Say She She’s follow up single – a sultry B side BLOW MY MIND has catalyzed their Karma Chief /Colemine 7” release as a must cop 45 for DJs coast to coast. They followed that with a billowing protest anthem NORMA in June; it was Say She She’s response to the then impending decision to overturn Roe Vs Wade is an urgent call for ACTION in support of protecting women’s rights and preserving the right to choose. “Weeee Will Not Go Back!/ Right is now Wrong/ What is left of left?” Their last single, TROUBLE, which was produced by members of The Extraordinaires (Charles Bradley). was released earlier this month and made its debut in KCRW’s weekly Top 10 charts. “The ladies of Say She She deliver a mesmerizing vocal performance, weaving their voices together in an elegant, haunting style that incorporates earworm melodies, lush harmonies, and playful adlibs, climactic hindi riffs,” Michael Major – Broadway World. Their debut LP is set for release this September out on Karma Chief/ Colemine Records.

Yuna – with support from YAWA (Amenta Abioto) – Early show! – 21+

There’s a timeless groove to the sound of Yuna’s music. Throughout her career, she has made soulful pop that contains Sade’s sultriness, the flair of Aaliyah, and the sweetness of Brandy. There are clear forebears upon her art, but her story is so singular that it’s hard to draw a line in the sand when it comes to Yuna’s lineage in the urban pop spectrum.  The singer-songwriter was born in Kedah, Malaysia, and spent most of her life growing up in Kuala Lumpur. Yuna was raised a devout Muslim but within an assimilated and secular enough society that she was exposed to a great deal of pop culture. In fact, her earliest memories of music are being driven around by her father in his second-hand BMW listening to ‘80s pop icon Paula Abdul, German metal band Scorpions, and Swedish rock duo Roxette. Via her previous albums, Yuna has built her palette of melodic, uplifting soul. Her third album Chapters in 2016 was something of a breakthrough, featuring production from Fisticuffs and features with Usher (“Crush”) and Jhene Aiko. They were formative and exciting experiences, but she’s flexing her collaborative muscles even more now. On her fourth album Rouge, the list of features is mouthwateringly impressive with appearances by Tyler, The Creator, Little Simz, Kyle, G-Eazy, Jay Park and Masego.  Crucially Yuna has never had to compromise her identity, style or vision. “I’m a Muslim singer-songwriter, but I never saw myself as that,” she offers. “That label became more obvious to me as I moved to LA. 80% of the population is Muslim in Malaysia like me, and we make music and I wear the hijab. It was really cool that everyone I met supported the fact that I do my own thing and don’t sacrifice my identity for the music.”  In 2022, Yuna splits her time between Kuala Lumpur and Los Angeles. Newly independent (she was previously with Verve/Universal), Yuna has been steadily working on new music during quarantine. In March 2022, she released her latest EP, Y1 with “Pantone 17 13 30” as the lead single. It is one of five EP releases that will complete her 5th studio album Y5 out in November.  She lists recent inspirations in Post Malone, H.E.R., and Anderson Paak. “I’ve done this for ten years and I still feel like I surprise people,” she laughs. “It’s fun because I get to educate people and I don’t feel a pressure to be a certain way. People have to understand that I’m different. Above everything I’m just a normal human being who loves making music, who believes in something. I don’t feel like I need to conform. I need to be my own person.”
