Cal Scruby – Early show! – All Ages – presented by Sean Healy
Cincinnati, Ohio-based rapper Cal Scruby was born in 1989 and grew up in a small Ohio town, slowly developing a love for hip-hop. In 2011, after spending time as a student at Ohio State University, Scruby began making his own music, honing a style that featured sharp freestyling skills and songs frequently centered around themes of pop culture or his collegiate lifestyle. He self-produced his first single, “Best Foot Forward,” in a library at OSU and later went on to post a series of a cappella freestyle videos he entitled “Scruby Snacks.” He signed with Riveting Entertainment in 2014 and the next year released his debut album, House in the Hills, with the label. The album’s lead single, “Ain’t Shit Change,” featured a cameo from Chris Brown and received massive worldwide attention. Scruby toured throughout the next two years and released his Long Story Short EP in 2017.

Stoner Control, You’re the Best, Lucion Hall – 21+
Lucion Hall is a power quartet that plays sentimental garage rock from Portland, Oregon. Tinged with elements of power pop and shoegaze, the nuanced songwriting can be both tender and muscular. Songwriter Lucion brings a style and persona influenced by the lyricism of Elliott Smith, the attitude of The Cramps, and the art rock theatricality of the Talking Heads. You’re the Best is a 4-piece punky/surfy outfit from Portland, Oregon composed of Alice Brennan, Emily Dillon, Peter Helmis (Algernon Cadwallader), and Maria DeHart (Bug Seance). They use driving beats, snappy riffs, and playful yet cutting lyrics to resist the status quo and make their listeners bob their heads. Last year they came out with their debut EP, which they recorded themselves in local practice spaces and garages. Creating a subversive narrative based largely on local stories, they capture the essence of punk with their DIY and antifascist ethic. On Sparkle Endlessly, Stoner Control sound like themselves. This is a feat achieved by virtue of the trio honing their skills as individual songwriters and musicians and as a working group. Singer/guitarist Charley Williams, singer/bassist Sam Greenspan and drummer Mike Cathcart, are each diligent students of their craft. Greenspan and Cathcart, college classmates at Portland’s Lewis & Clark, met Williams when their previous groups played a show together. The three bonded initially over the albums of Green Day, Oasis, The Rolling Stones, Wilco, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. It was pretty clear from the start there was enough musical ground in common to form a band of their own. Stoner Control’s sound in turn became one ever enamored with the endearing endurance of big riffs, endlessly listenable melodies, chugging rhythms, and heartfelt vocals. Over the last five years, the Portland trio have refined their style while playing in Portland’s underground circuit of basements and bars. Doubling down on the creativity that has always been there, their third album features the group’s broadest sonic palette to date, one highlighted by musical guests(hark! a trumpet!), reaching vocals, honesty, and deliberately considered tones, guitar and otherwise. Recorded with Mo Troper and Brian Harvey at Singing Sands Studios, the colors in the palette presented here are familiar but brighter. The group has always written with sincerity but here there are moments granting a closer view of the phosphenes seen beneath closed eyelids.
