Astrid Sonne is a Danish, London based composer and viola player. Throughout heracclaimed discography, Astrid Sonne has been carefully crafting different moodsthrough electronic and acoustic instrumental endeavours.On her most recent album “Great Doubt” (January 2024) this skill is refined, now withthe distinct addition of the composer’s own vocal in the fore. The tone of each trackis unmistakably Sonne’s, structured around contrasts through an impeccable senseof timing. Lyrics on the album are sparse, merely highlighting different scenes oremotional states of being, leaving the music to fill in the blanks. Yet they also form apattern of ambiguity, consolidated through the album title, searching for answersthrough looking at how and what you are asking, questions for the world, questionsof love.The viola, a trusted companion since Astrid Sonne’s youth, appears effortlesslythroughout the album, fully integrated into the sonic universe; through a pizzicatodriven arrangement in the poignant track “Almost” or along with booms and claps inmutated cinematic stabs during “Give my all”, paraphrasing Mariah Carey’s 1997ballad. In fact, you could evensay they’re one of the main reasons it happened at all.The Faint, founded in Omaha in the mid-‘90s, have always created againstthe grain, disinterested in making anything except what their own inspirationdrives them to make. Each album since their 1998 debut Media has shiftedand evolved that desire. Some albums, like 1999’s Blank-Wave Arcade, camefrom urgent, short recording processes, while others, like 2004’s Wet FromBirth, were more carefully constructed. For 2001’s Danse Macabre, they settheir sights a bit further afield, attempting to conjure the energy of bumpingBerlin dance floors from nearly 5,000 miles away in eastern Nebraska.
