Quadeca & Quickly Quickly – ALL AGES

Ben Lasky adopted the moniker Quadeca during preschool recess, in the necessity to name a superhuman persona. At ten years old, Quadeca took on the heroic task that’d become the central focus of his multi-hyphenate creative career–writing and producing his own expressive style of music. He would go on to attract a cult-like following, where fans are prone to analyze his work and discuss it communally. Quadeca’s first forays into concept albums, Voice Memos and From Me To You, both made impressive debuts across streaming platforms for an independent musician. Lasky responded by shifting the focus of Quadeca towards achieving greatness in his LP’s craftsmanship, and away from the virality of his premier platform, YouTube, where his subscribership was nearing two million. The release of the spectral and impressionistic “I Didn’t Mean To Haunt You” album signified a watershed moment for Lasky. The credits tout contributions from Danny Brown and others, mastering at Abbey Road, but simultaneously stands as the biggest statement-piece of his creative independence: A fully self-produced opus with an accompanying film that has landed him newfound levels of acclaim from music fans and critics alike.. The reception stirred widespread internet discourse about the validity of multi-media creators evolving in the internet age, which culminated towards a short series of analytical videos from critic Anthony Fantano who named the album’s lead single “Born Yesterday” as the 7th best song of 2022. Now, Quadeca’s vision is focused straight ahead, onto the next opus that stands tall outside of its zeitgeist context. The new quickly, quickly EP finds Portland, Oregon’s Graham Jonson back in his home studio, engrossed in ‘60s psychedelic soul music, imagining some bygone era where it was all about the drum sounds and tape decay. He calls it Easy Listening; the songs are short and inviting, modest yet loaded with ideas. Each started with the drum part, a loose grid for Jonson to paint his idiosyncratic psych-pop across, again playing nearly every instrument. The set follows his 2021 LP, The Long And The Short of It, the 22-year-old musician’s debut on Ghostly International, a coming-of-age jump from the chill beats-oriented corners of the internet to a full-fledged songwriting project with hi-fi sophistication. The moment culminated with Pitchfork’s Rising profile, “quickly, quickly’s Technicolor Pop Bursts Beyond the Algorithm,” and kickstarted the formation of his 6-piece live band for a run of exploratory shows along the west coast. But as the tangible demands for his music pulled him outward and some growing pains in his personal life ensued, Jonson focused his energy back inside; to the comforts of home recording, filling his space with more gear and sessions with friends. Maybe a bit of a droll title for a hard time, Easy Listening briefly pauses for air, offering five of his breeziest basement jams for public enjoyment.
Sam Blasucci (of Mapache) w/ Dan Horne Band – 21+

Sam Blasucci is best known as one half of Mapache, a Southern California roots-rock duo just as instantly recognizable for their elegant, intertwined guitar parts as they are for their devoted, Nudie-Suit wearing fanbase. But when Blasucci was writing the songs that would become his debut solo record, Off My Stars, he found himself less focused on the guitar and more gravitated toward a different instrument: piano. The mother of Clay Finch, his Mapache bandmate, was getting rid of one, and so Blasucci took the piano, carefully transporting it to his home in Ojai, California, with the help of a few strong friends, including Farmer Dave Scher of Beachwood Sparks (and a Mapache collaborator). “Farmer Dave wasn’t even wearing shoes,” Blasucci remembers, laughing. Once the piano was safely in there, he became deeply attached, playing on it multiple hours a day: “It’s changed the way I think about music, having all the keys laid out in front of me,” he explains. “Having that sort of changed everything.” Also inspired by his recent time riding out the pandemic in New Orleans, where the clubs may have closed but the music never stopped, Blasucci used that piano to start writing one of the most inspired batches of songs of his career thus far. New gems like “Turn Yourself Around” and “Sha La La” were developing with a Southern swing and classic songbook sparkle, and when assessing the growing stack of music he was working on, Blasucci realized that there was something about these tunes that wasn’t quite suited for a Mapache record. Infused with an honest, personal perspective about settling into adult life—about developing as a person and a partner and a family member—these songs were straight from the heart, a clear window, recently Windexed, into the life of one of the most talented members of the L.A.-area underground rock scene. Using just as much inspiration from the music of Ronnie Wood and Sade as the films of Ingmar Bergman and the writing of Brian Doyle, Blasucci started to see a vision of songs that are all “fully autobiographical.” Blasucci reached out to songwriter and producer Johnny Payne, and the two decamped to Dan Horne’s Lone Palm Studio, the home/studio where Mapache has in the past both recorded and abided in. Blasucci’s direction to Payne—acting as producer and as multi-instrumentalist, performing on everything from shaker to “guitar pancake”—was simple: no pretense, no affect, no Mr. Cool. On “Proud of You Dad,” Blasucci dug into his archives for a song that’s he had for some time, originally having written and recorded it just for his father, David Blasucci, a musician who was at one time a touring member in the band Toto, and who has performed and acted in Christopher Guest movies like A Mighty Wind. “If I ever told you this while we were in the same room / I know you would cover your ears and run,” Sam sings over a rustic, campfire acoustic progression. But Sam is his own man now, writing the new chapters of his own life with an aw-shucks tone that belies his prolific workload. Even through the pandemic—and even with the ongoing backlogs at pressing plants—Blasucci has still managed to put out beloved Mapache records in each of the last three years, and he and the band have no plans to slow down anytime soon. “I’m definitely the type of artist that is constantly creating,” Sam says, matter of fact. “And I can’t seem to really stop.”.

Believe You Me 9 Year Anniversary Party! w/ Ash Lauryn (Detroit), Andy Warren & Ginkgo – 21+

Ash Lauryn balances between two worlds, with an old-school house-head foundation and a digital age suaveness, blending her skills as a deejay, writer, curator, and radio host to champion black dance music. Discovering her passion for music in her native Detroit, she was inspired to start deejaying in her current residence Atlanta, taking inspiration from the legendary Kai Alce of NDATL and Vicki Powell. After noticing a lack of representation for Black millennials in electronic music, Ash started her blog Underground and Black, which has since grown into a wide-ranging platform covering her annual Movement Festival party, monthly NTS show, and podcast of the same name. Her passion for music has led her across the globe, from her past residencies in Atlanta, Expressions, and Deep South, to gigs at Nowadays in New York, Panorama Bar Berlin, and Printworks London. She’s played with musicians such as Joe Claussell and Moodymann and at renowned festivals like Afropunk, Dimensions, and Flow Festival Helsinki. Her writing has appeared in The Face Magazine, Mixmag, and Resident Advisor, and she recently served as Guest Editor for Beatport’s online magazine Beatportal. She has also interviewed electronic music legends Robert Hood and Honey Dijon and recently curated a line-up for Boiler Room Festival New York that included the likes of Ron Trent and Analog Soul. Lately, Ash was nominated for DJ of the Year at the Bembe DJ Awards and participated in Off-White’s SS21 “Imaginary TV” platform. Brickbat Mansion and Holocene present: We Are Parasols (album release show!) w/ Darkswoon & DJ Wednesday- 21+

On Body Horror, We Are Parasols meld new-wave synths, thundering industrial percussion, and a sly sense of humor into an eminently engaging slab of static-drenched noise pop. Breathy, sneer-sung vocals wind through a sonic landscape of cracking static and the hiss of rotting electronics. Rumbling sub-bass and chainsaw leads strut and swagger over a foundation of dark pop melody. The brutally beautiful chaos of Body Horror, the sonic contradictions and extremes, are as deeply expressive as the tales the lyrics tell. While early releases from the band drew primary from indie-electro, shoegaze, and post-rock, We Are Parasols has no allegiance to genre. While their prior work had been conceptual, the isolation brought about by the pandemic resulted in a looking inward. Leaning into this reinvention, the band chose to stop using anything remotely like shoegaze guitar, seeking to balance the industrial core of the songs with something more inviting and human. Body Horror represent an important evolution in the work of We Are Parasols. Underpinning the deep bass, industrial beats, and pop vocal melodies are deeply personal vignettes that speak to the universal experience of being human. Bandcamp WebsiteDarkswoon is a Portland-based trio that has carved out a unique blend of genres. Drawing from elemental post-punk roots, their music is imbued with goth-tinged atmospheric guitars and ethereal vocals, bordering on dream pop. Layers of beats, haunting synth, and melodically driven bass add a modern edge, while still paying homage to old-school goth. The emotionally charged and potent sound of Darkswoon was founded by composer Jana Cushman (vocals, guitar) in 2014 as a solo project, and later completed with the addition of Rachel Ellis (beats, synths) and Norah Lynn (bass) in 2017. Their sophomore release, ‘Bloom Decay’ (2022, Icy Cold Records), represents an evolution of Darkswoon’s sound, emerging after the challenges of a global pandemic with a body of work that has been praised by some as one of the best albums of 2022 (Stereo Embers’, Last Rites’). Bandcamp Website Originally based in Los Angeles, DJ Wednesday was a staple in the LA scene for well over a decade. Her radio show Generation Death was touted as the longest-running goth radio show, with 14 years of history. In the clubs, Wednesday’s diverse style was instrumental in the growth of the LA Shoegaze and Post-punk scene through her co-creation of Violaine. Upon relocating to Portland in late 2008 Wednesday started her own ever-evolving concept night, Brickbat Mansion. Musically her DJ style includes a heavy dose of Goth, Ethereal, Shoegaze, Dark 80’s, Dark Wave and Post-Punk. Facebook

Helens, Tremor, Centre Detente – 21+

WE ARE SAD TO ANNOUNCE THAT TEN MILLION LIGHTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PERFORM ON TONIGHT’S BILL DUE TO INJURY. THE SHOW WILL HOWEVER GO ON, WITH A GREAT NIGHT OF MUSIC FROM HELENS, TREMOR AND CENTRE DETENTE.Helens is a Shoegaze / Dream Pop quartet based out of Portland, Oregon. After several years and EPs they have released a new album of melancholic anthems to soundtrack an escape to anywhere else but here. The new album, Somewhere In Nowhere, was recorded in 2020 by Corey Coffman (Gleemer) and was released on November 18th, 2022. with help from Portland all-star label, Bud Tapes. Somewhere In Nowhere infuses the band’s unique Shoegaze/Post-Rock/Alternative mixture with lusher melodies and more Dream Pop sensibility than previous output. The recent expansion of the lineup to a four piece with added guitar textures has also widened the band’s scope which carries the listener from wistful wash to searing sonics.Formed in 2018, Tremor is a Portland-based act that combines elements from various genres of music, ranging from psychedelia to shoegaze, jazz, acid folk, and art rock. The band consists of Teppei Fukuda (vocals, guitar, and keys), Bobby Lukas (drums and percussion), Felipe Ferreira (guitar, keys, modular synthesizer), Rae Warden (vocals and keys), and Jett Kauffman (bass guitar). With deep roots in poetry and literature, Tremor aims to create a sense of dreaminess and seismic soundscapes through their music and lyrics.Ten Million Lights are the juxtaposition of beauty and noise. Existing to fulfill their need to get loud and a craving of catharsis, they create epic psychedelic soundscapes combining heavy guitars and rhythms with beautiful melodies and harmonies. This “noisy dream-pop and psych-tinged shoegaze,“ as The Portland Mercury calls it, is exemplified with their latest release, Shine So Bright. Centre Detente is Modular synthesizer-centered electronic music from Portland, Oregon.
