Riovaz – RioRave II: Disturb the Norm – w/ Wolfacejoeyy -All Ages

Riovaz’s music deftly captures the frenetic, unpredictable energy of growing up. Influenced by drum & bass, post-punk and dance composition, his genre-blurring, cutting-edge pop songs that have won him both critical and commercial success before he even graduated high school—are both emotionally rich and dizzyingly varied. It’s rare that two songs sound exactly the same. On his lovesick 2020 breakthrough “Prom Night,” he sang of feeling like death over lilting pop arrangements. But he’s equally likely to spill his heart over crystalline electronic arrangements (“you’re a parasite”) or bouncy house refractions (“Tell Me All Your Fears”). It’s all different, but each track is united by honest, lived-in lyrics from a teenager who doesn’t want to pretend to be anyone but himself. He demonstrates that on his eclectic EP Disturb The Norm. The 8-song project boasts singles “U Neva” and “Tantrum (Pace Yourself)” as well as the skaiwater-assisted “Hypnotized.” Propulsive and poignant, the dance anthems continue to highlight the 19-year-old’s songwriting and defiant originality. Disturb The Norm went on to received major backing – Office Magazine praised him naming his process “boundless,” while Billboard, acclaimed him as a “21 Under 21” artists to watch. Riovaz grew up in Jersey City, NJ surrounded by music. His brother is an avid music fan, his sister is a talented singer, and their parents were always playing ’80s Argentinian alt-rock and Michael Jackson at home. This consistent exposure to music from a young age initially transitioned into curious artistry through playing Guitar Hero, and by 13, he was making his own songs. Before uploading his track “Prom Night”, which now has over 100 million streams, he had been regularly posting music to SoundCloud and Instagram. The formula for “Prom Night” wasn’t any more calculated, but there is a spark to the track. It resonated with listeners quickly. When Riovaz saw it organically going viral—the audio for the song multiplying by 20, 40, or 50 each time he looked—he posted his first-ever TikTok and told his family about his music for the first time. A busy year for Rio – after the success of Disturb The Norm, the burgeoning artist kicked off his headline, sold out, RIORAVE tour and performed to wild crowds in Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Orlando, Atlanta, and New York before wrapping in Chicago. He also went overseas for three additional shows and performed at Pharrell Williams’ Something In The Water. With all his newfound success, Riovaz proves that he’s far more than an artist to watch. Wolfacejoeyy is a 20-year-old artist from Staten Island, NY. He started his music career with producing in 2017 for SoFaygo and RewindRaps, soon after in 2020 Wolfacejoeyy wanted to take it to the next level and pursue his own music career. Since the virality of Wolfacejoeyy’s “Shake It,” he’s been releasing back-to-back catchy melodies, hip-shaking production, and angelic vocals. With the support from his city artists like B-Lovee and Murda B dancing to his viral sounds on TikTok and Tariq from Power (also know as Whereis22) being one of his main collaborators, Wolfacejoeyy has New York City Behind him. Paving his lane in both the underground and drill spaces, Joeyy has grown a core fanbase like no other.

Jim White & Marisa Anderson – w/ Methods Body – 21+

Thank you to our event sponsor Revival Drum Shop!Jim White and Marisa Anderson share an abounding appetite for musical exploration. White,as a member of Venom P Stinger, Dirty Three, and Xylouris White, is well known for his creativeand idiosyncratic drumming. His singular abilities have also led to collaborations with Cat Power, PJ Harvey, and Bill Callahan among others. Anderson’s prolific output as a solo performer, her mastery of traditional folk and blues forms and her abilities to make them entirely her own hasestablished her as one of the most exciting and forward-thinking guitarists of the last decade. White and Anderson’s considerable technical skills are used in the most inventive and unconventional manner on their debut duo recording, The Quickening. The duo’s friendship and shared explorative nature inform these warm and daring improvisations. The Quickening’s remarkable performances take the listener on a journey of exuberant discovery. White and Anderson are instrumentalists whose voices are unmistakable and spellbindingly lyrical. Anderson unravels guitar traditions from across the globe into atmospheres all their own through improvisations and melodic lines that transform with each iteration. White implements an array of sticks, brushes, and techniques that imbue each rhythmic passage with its own distinct personality. Together their melodic flourishes cascade and twist upon one another, at times trading conversational exchanges, and at others drifting in unison as if lost in the same train of thought. Ecstatic pieces like “Gathering” and “The Other Christmas Song” harken back to Anderson’s playing with the improv-heavy Evolutionary Jass Band and carry with them a sense of perpetual motion. That feeling of urgency and maximalism is in turn contrasted by the open spaces and quiet subtleties of “Unwritten” and “Diver”. The idea of a collaboration developed while on the road together in 2015, Anderson playing solo and White playing with Xylouris White. The Quickening began at the Portland studio Type Foundry in late 2018, where the duo initially agreed to meet and improvise and record. Happy with the recordings, the duo headed to Mexico City and into Estudios Noviembres, a time capsule of a studio from the 70’s that had been largely closed before some young engineers took it over. The “slight disorientation” of working in less familiar environments mirrored their willingness to plunge headfirst into exploring new sonic territory together. Anderson purchased a new nylon string Ramos-Castillo guitar from a Mexican luthier just ahead of recording which leant to the spontaneity of “The Lucky” and “The Quickening”. The duo did not rehearse or perform together prior to the recording sessions; as White puts it, “it’s good to suspend disbelief at this stage of playing.” The Quickening (released on Thrill Jockey in 2020) is an improvised work guided by emotional intuition and executed by players whose mastery of their instruments is undeniable. The elegance of Jim White and Marisa Anderson’s highly attuned collaboration lays in each player’s ability to empathetically spin their collective experience into music of potent and boundless beauty.METHODS BODY (Portland, OR, USA) creates original sound art and music using custom tuning systems, involuted polyrhythms, and the cadences of language. John Niekrasz (Ecstatic Peace, ESP-Disk’) and Luke Wyland (The Leaf Label, Hometapes, Crammed Records) use bespoke live-sampling technologies and meta-cognitive compositions to inhabit waves of subliminal melody and deep, uncanny grooves.

Spend the Night Presents: Move D (Germany), Shi Shi (NYC via PDX)- 21+

Spend The Night presents: Move Dhttp://residentadvisor.net/dj/movedhttps://www.discogs.com/artist/838-Move-Dhttps://soundcloud.com/move-dShi Shihttps://soundcloud.com/djshishiiii Move D, aka David Moufang, is one of modern electronic musicสผs most beloved souls with a long and varied musical history with roots in the 60s and 70s jazz, psychedelic, rock, soul and early electronica.Making his first appearance on vinyl as part of a school bands competition in 1983, it was only another four years before he started toying with the medium as a DJ, playing funk, soul, hip-hop, and proto-house. In the 90s things began to move fast with the inception of his Source Records imprint, early productions (including the debut Move D LP สปKunststoffสผ – Source Records, 1994) and the beginnings of a 26 album relationship with a close friend, the late Pete Namlook. Since then, Moufang has become an unassuming heavyweight in house music as a producer for countless forward-thinking labels, a collaborator and a truly original selector. His discography is long and impressive and holds releases on a broad variety of labels such as Source, Modern Love, Workshop, Smallville, Warp, Running Back, Uzuri and Electric Minds among others plus collaborations and involvements in projects like Magic Mountain High (w. Juju & Jordash) and Reagenz (w. Jonah Sharp). Not one to slack off, his live and Dj performances have been on par with (if not superior to) his studio work, pulling from all corners of his diverse catalog to create an experience that attacks the hips and head in equal measure. His releases touch on house conventions but are delivered in his inimitable style, leaving everyone – from longtime fans to the uninitiated— with their jaws on the floor and their hands in the air.
